The 993 is the ultimate evolution of the original air-cooled 911 concept. It has many modern refinements such as EFI, AC and an improved rear suspension, yet retains that raw spirit of the classic 911. It is almost like having a 911S longhood w/o the drawbacks of 40 year old technology. A modern classic as they say. I actually set out to buy an early 911S but settled on the 993 because I wanted a car to enjoy when I wanted.
There is no doubt that the later water-cooled cars are awesome. I have driven both 996 and 997 cabs and enjoyed them both. I understand your description of the "Roundel" feel of the 997 (and is less insulting to 997 owners than my "Lexus-like" description - I will now use the bimmer analogy). If I was after a dd, I would certainly consider these, but as a weekend car, the 993 suits me fine.

993s have 6-speeds and a pretty decent A/C. CIS hasn't been used on 911s since the SC ending in 1983. The 993 has Bosch Motronic EFI. It even has a variable geometry intake (varioram) - quite sophisticated.

I said that the 993 offers the classic 911 experience withOUT drawbacks like cis, 4speeds, crap a/c etc.

I distinctly remember having exactly the same reaction after spending some quality time with a new 993C4S back in 1996, after getting out of my 911SC.

but having driven every bmw since the e30 m3, I haven't found one that drives like me 993, although the E30 M3 was probably as close as it gets.

I think the author is a fanboi and a big one at that. There is nothing wrong with the 993 but I think if you want a modern Porsche 911, the 997 the way to go as its a modern car. Not much more to say.
People that bemoan things like this are the same people that bemoan any improvements in technology. The older is ALWAYS better, well not always
