Default Front grill to protect the radiators

While I was cleaning the front of my C2S I looked at the radiators and was amazed at the stuff that had gotten in there. I had, of course, dead bugs but also leaves and even a 3" by 2" piece of red plastic. So, my project for the weekend wil lbe to make some mesh grills to protect the radiators. Fortunately the 997.2 front bumper cover design makes it easier to get the grills installed than say a Cayman which I will do next. I could see small nicks in the coils of the radiators and found some small rocks in with the leaves. If anyone has made grills tell me about them if not you may want to. When the rain stops I'm off to Home Depot.

The issue with grills is that it blocks the big stuff but the small stuff still needs to be cleaned and it is more difficult to do that with grills in place.

I always make it a habit to vacuum out all the debris every week when I wash the car.

I agree, but some of the bigger hard stuff is what U want to avoid as it can puncture the radiator. I also agree that putting grills in makes it harder to clean out the small stuff. I'm still going to look into making some grills need a project anyway as this winter in South Texas is not a Texas winter. Someone left the door open at the Okla border.

But Home Depot does carry 1/4 inch plastic-coated wire mesh. Too bad it's green!

Heck, they have that spray paint for plastic now, it's probably the type of plastic that will works with that paint. The stuff gives a serious coating when it's compatible. Get flat black of course.

The HD mesh uses a solid green plastic coating. I think if you were to paint over it, it would look beat up in no time as the new paint chipped off.

Maybe it'd be better to start with uncoated mesh and have the finished parts powder coated if you were inclined to go the DIY route.

I'd also try to make the screens easily removable to make it easier to clean crud out. Rare-earth magnets maybe?

No disrespect, what I'm saying is the new formulations of paint and common plastics are _meant_ for each other: excellent durable results. With some plastics it will suck no doubt like you're saying. Gotta test it first of course, easy to do, in a few days you'll have your answer.

Good luck with your testing. But if you come back with a definitive answer in just a few days, it'll mean I was right!

Just checked my plastic bumpers and plastic trim around the door and interior. Plastic painted seat backs, center console too, all painted "plastic," all chip free. Must be related to PVC, resin, polystyrene, ABS, check yours. Probably won't work on polyethylene or teflon so you're correct in that regard.

Automotion.com has both black and silver mesh grills for 997s and Boxsters. I had mine installed on my 2007 997 when I had the K40 and laser diffusers installed since they had to take the bumpers off anyway for the K40 install. I am very happy with the grills and on my previous 2000 986 used the central vac with an extension to clean the radiators.
