OT: not everyone wants a 997!

Parts might be a bitch if they really go under.
I *love* the S5. If my business were going better I'd upgrade from my S4 to the S5. Certainly not as visceral as a C2S but striking and pretty good going down the road up to 8/10ths or so.
Your list is a good one - I'd take a look at a new CTS-V and see if there are any "going out of business" fire sales going on for that car.
Come to think of it - a Z51 'vette might be more comfy than a C2S and still goes like stink!
GT-R would also be on my list but it isn't all that much more comfy than a C2S.

If it wasn't for the 997 I would consider an M3 or even a Z06. Not sure what your buddy is looking for, but by the sound of it he is not really looking for a true sports car if he thought the 997 had too much "road noise".

Mine is a Cab which makes some difference but is also still on 18" winter tires. that should make the ride more supple but I'm not sure about noise levels as it's just over 4 months since I was on summer tires.

He probably thought there wasn't enough luggage space or cup holder either.
If he's concerned about road noise he can't be too serious about a performance car.
How about a Nissan G35. S5 would be a nice option too.

Cabriolet version. Softer spring rate on one of the axles (forget which) and stiffer on the other. Tire brand can make a SIGNIFICANT difference. My normal street tires are Bridgestones,--very friendly. The Continentals on my backup set of rims are quite harsh,--they carry a wear rating of 285 while the Bridgestones are 140. Yet,--I still get great mileage with the Bridgestones.

Don't think there is a better combo car than the M3. The M5/M6 seem to me too big to give what your friend wants. For a little softer option I'd look at the Lexus IS-F.

Road noise is mostly a function of road surfaces. The current trend for concrete pavement and generalized neglect (in spite of financing we all pay through a variety of taxes) are the culprits.

My friend's not a hard core performance guy, but enjoys the performance the "old smoker" (aka M5) has given him and he enjoys throwing it around when there's no family in the car.
The Vantage is a bit expensive and has questionable reliability. The R8 would be an interesting suggestion - I wouldn't mind trying that one! But I suspect the test driving will be centered around BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes dealerships. Kind of nice living vicariously. Onward!
