Called the dealer and he quoted me $300 to change the oil. I always changed my oil in the Boxster's, so decided to do it myself. The oil and filter cost me $78. The Porsche filter was $24, another ripoff. Took me about 45 minutes. The 997 oil filter is much more accessable than the Boxster. The only special tool you may have to buy is the 8mm allen wrench, which is large and most people don't own one.

Tip: Place your ramps on a slight incline, so when you back on them the car will be level.

Though easier with, you can change the oil on the 05 to 08s without using ramps or a jack. Good for you for "stickin' it to the man"

That's about right. The counterpoint is that a good relationship with one's dealer usually pays off if major issues crop up down the road.

Holbert's did an oil service for me in '07 for $85, including 10 quarts of synthetic, OEM filter, and labor. That was before the 10% PCA discount. Maybe they just felt sorry for me.

I did the same Jim, but I am stuck with the 'service now' light that comes up at every start . called a dealer, he wanted $60 bucks to reset it. I believe either that or buy an OBD sensor for a few hundred dollars. It was my first 'break in' oil change after 2000 miles.

Assuming there is $75+- in parts (oil and filter), a couple hundred to me sounds very reasonable and actually cheap, and that's probably what I have paid. But from the dealer's standpoint, their cost (facilities, service manager, tech, equipment, computer systems, general overhead, etc.), it's actually a loss leader to only charge a couple hundred, or more simply, a waste of time. I understand the feeling that $300 is a ripoff and I would probably react the same way, but on analysis it's actually justifiable.

Dealers, especially now show be doing whatever it takes to get people in the door. Trying to charge me $300 for an oil change isn't going to do it. I would pay them $100. That would get me to bring my car in and then they could try and upsell me to other services they might offer, plus a chance to sell me another Porsche.

you can order the porsche filter from suncoast for $14.00.

the oil is on sale often from pep boys (or similar) for under $5.00 per quart. i paid 6.00 from WalMart.

I change my oil for about 65.00 or so and about 30 minutes of work.

Great attempt at your justification, but a miserable FAIL....esquire sir. In your neck of the woods (and mine) the dealer's take it to us.

An oil change is an oil change. Other dealers (for other types of vehicles) charge far, far less, and they the same overhead(s) and high tech equipment. There is no reason to charge $300.00 for a P-Car oil change just because it is a Porsche. Porsche uses a cheap paper filter, and Mobil 1 is Mobil 1. Heck, the filter and oil plug are so easy to get to as well. It's not even a time intensive labor issue.

I have friend that was just told by a local dealer near Pasadena he needs a new tranny for his 2007 Carrera S. They told him 8K. I am not sure if that is the going rate, but it seems expensive to me.

Not sure about the warranty. They may say he tracks the car, which he does.
