REMOVING THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER:
1. Lower the steering wheel and pull it all the way aft.
No need to take the steering wheel off.
2. Pull the plastic former right under the cluster towards
you or straight aft. This will reveal the two torx screws
that locks the cluster inplace.
3. Remove two torx srews. I used an extra tool(magnet) so
not to drop the screws themsleves.
4. Now you can pull the cluster straight back. It is still
held by two clips in the back, so it will need a strong tug
towards you. I found the best way is to insert your fingers
under then behind the cluster and pull it towards you.
A. The harness is held by the black harness lock tab. Swing
the black tab down and the harness will push itself off the
cluster.

1. If a new instrument cluster should be installed, read out the values if possible from the instrument cluster.
2. Loosen the steering wheel adjustment, put the steering wheel in the front-most and lowest position and lock the steering wheel adjustment.
3. Unscrew the two fastening screws 1.
4. The instrument cluster is also secured in the dashboard with two retaining clips. Therefore, pull the instrument cluster abruptly forward and if necessary push instrument cluster away from dashboard from underneath.
5. Release electrical connector on instrument cluster A and unplug it.
6. Pull out instrument cluster at the sides and to the left.
Installation is the reverse.

Mike,
Thanks for this great DIY. I've had a very small but annoying rattle from the instrument cluster for some time. Ira Porsche was even nice enough to change out the whole cluster without resolving the problem. Now that I see how easy it is to pull out, I may try to do a little insulating of my own! Nice work.

There is a TSB for this problem that does not involve a new instrument cluster but rather putting in foam insulation in the right spot. I had this fix done at the dealer; however the instrument cluster went dead during the fix and they had to order a new cluster under warranty (wonder how much that goes for). So im glad i didnt mess with it.

Thanks Mike. Very helpful indeed.
One question; if I unplug the cluster and then later plug it back, will it continue working as before or does it require some factory/OEM re-set?

But I wouldn't insert the key while the cluster is disconnected. This could cause CEL to come on.

Thank you Mike!
Related question, I've developed a haze on the backside of two of the instrument lenses. I assume this is similar to the haze on the inside of the windshield fromt he out gassing of the interior plastics.
From your photos, I see a tab on the left side of the cluster. Can this be popped out so that I can get access to wipe down the other side of the lens or is the whole cluster sealed?
Thanks.
-Pete

Have you looked in renntech.org for the TSB of dash noises/rattles? There's a bunch of them there.
