I had an OEM SSK installed in my 996 along with the EVO shiftlink - I love the way the car shifts. Direct, bolt-like, and significantly shorter throws than stock - at least on the 996.

Maybe mine is atypical, but I'd say it is very charitable to say that it is "difficult" to get into 1st gear when cold. I live in a hot desert climate and for the first 20 minutes of driving 1st gear is a royal bitch. If a spouse is going to drive your car, consider this hastle as well. No fun being at a green light and taking 3 attempts to get it into 1st gear from neutral.

I too also have the short shifter from factory. I've read that the "guts" are really from B&M. Whichever, it still is a great improvement and yes, it's a real PITA to get into first when cold.

But once all warmed up, it's a great option to have.

Hey Jim, I don't know about today, but back in 2005/6 the "guts" were completely different, as shown in this thread:
