I live outside of DC and July and August are pretty brutal. Having said that, I still love my cabriolet. On those really hot, humid days, the top is up as it is when traffic is at a real crawl. With the top up, I still feel like there is a lot of room in the car, and I don't feel claustophobic. With the quality of insulation in the top, road noise is low compared to other convertibles and the AC works fine.
Top down is a great experience in a 911, and with the windows up and windscreen in, there is less blowing than in my Acura with the sun roof open. And though there are some dog days in mid summer, there are other many days in the spring and fall when top down is pure bliss.
For me, most of my top down cruising is in the recreational driving mode. If you're going to be driving in shirt and tie and during the hottest part of the day or in a rush hour crawl, then yep, you'll likely have the top up, but so what? I don't find that situation so bad compared to a coupe and I wouldn't give up the top down experience on those other days.
Just my two cents worth for my situation, anyway.

I had to make a run to LAX on Saturday and was amazed to see so many people in cabs with their tops DOWN in pretty hot conditions. There's a time and a place for top down driving. The 405 at 2 pm ain't it.
Along PCH at 5 pm is quite acceptable!

Edgy, if I lived in So Cal again I'd drive around with my top down all the time...So Cal heat ain't nothin' compared to Florida! It's disgusting here and it's not even August-September yet. ;-)

I have a cab and love it. Even on a hot day, when the sun starts to set it is really great. On a hot day in the middle of the summer in the mid afternoon I keep the top up. It is very well insulated from noise and weather. Best of both worlds IMO.
