Dension Gateway 500 iPod Adapter Arrived Today

Question for those who have the install done.
I am curious about the USB port. Has anyone tried sticking a USB drive with mp3s on it to see if the Denison reads that and plays it as songs. If so, how does it handle the files/folders etc.
The thought is to stick a 4 or 8 GB USB stick in it and leave it there for the songs, thereby freeing up the Ipod.

A question about the AUX port. How does one switch between say, Ipod and AUX? Is there a switch on the unit or does it prioritze ports based on what is connected?
The thought is to be able to use that for Bluetooth Phone sound in conjunction with a Parrot kit. Now it would be slick if it switches to AUX when the Parrot comes on, and plays the phone voice over the speakers, and then switches back to Ipod when the call disconnects. Parrot has a relay interface already so the AUX port wouldnt see anything when there is no call.

A quick question about the aux ports - Rick said that the ipod is apparently the default. Does the ipod actually have to be unplugged for the aux to be active, or can the ipod just be turned off? Seems like a switch would be more convenient. Supposedly the neocar NAV TV uses a switch.

1. iPod
2. USB mass storage device
3. AUX
So to use the AUX input, there should be no iPod or USB device connected.
If you plan to use the AUX input for satellite radio or something else, it would be better to route the iPod cable somewhere in the main cabin so you can easily unplug the iPod to activate the AUX input.

Got the unit Friday and got my nerve up this morning. Actually it was very easy after being able to read back through this thread and the install manual. I used the plug for Nav or CD for power (the one I took a photo of earlier). There is plenty of room to route the wires behind the carpet. I opened the ring at
the location Rick identified to the right of the break mechanism (again as shown in the photo). Note:
be careful removing the small blue lock, it flies away easily and can be tough to find
Plugged in power, Ipod and Accessory (I did not use the usb), turned the ignition and it worked!
I have to review the operational information and reformat my songs into play lists but it seems to work seamlessly. The sound through the Bose is great, no wandering frequency stuff like the FM solution. I enjoyed it so much I put about 100 miles on the car this afternoon!
Thanks Rick for all your help, Larry too! If an electronics clutz like me can do this...

Luckily there were some extra connectors with blue plug inserts in the Gateway 500 install kit that I was able to use.

To add other components to the unit, you can route a switch (common rca plugs) that is available and can be placed in the vehcle to switch between iPod, Aux and USB.

If I were to remove the Dension Unit, will it be detectable by the dealer that I had something installed, or can it look like factory original after removal (for warranty purposes)? Thanks!

I am about to place an order so I removed the nuts holding what I believe to be the power amp in the spare wheel well in the front trunk of my 996TT (04). Cables are awfully tight and I can't see anything that looks like an optical connection.
In Rick's pictures, the Dension bypass seems connected 'before' the CD changer.
I then looked at the Dension manual, which has a nice warning: "CD Changer is a main condition of the
usage of Gateway 500. So if a CD Changer does not exist in the audio system, the CD Changer interface might need to be enabled on the head unit. In some circumstances the head unit might require a service where re-configuration will result"
Did anyone do this install on a MOST 996 without CD changer ?

No CD or Nav. Tapped MOST at amplifier in trunk (behind tire inflator stuff). Works fine and sounds great! I get a little alternator whine coming in from the RCA cables and my portable GPS/MP3 player, but still much better than any FM modulator.
