I asked my bride to check 'em....she fainted.

Then I told her it was on the car...all is well now.

Everybody here should know by now (and if you don't, now you know) that you should be pressing down just below the crest when closing your trunk lid. This area is where the latch bracket is attached to the lid. And this is where the closing force should be applied. Pressing down on the crest will likely work the nuts loose due to the amount of flex the aluminum lid has.

Glad to get the proper info from Ben on how to close the trunk. My salesperson instructed me to push down on the crest, fortunately I haven't used the trunk much.

i push down on the crest as well because i dont like fingerprints on the hood. Must have closed it at least 50 times and the crest is still rock solid.

I don't like fingerprints either, that's why I always stuff the MF towel that I keep in the door compartment into my pocket when I get out to open and close the trunk.

Salesmen are not known for their engineering acumen. I would never rely on their advice when it comes to mechanical and structural matters.

Closing the lid a few times using the crest may not do any damage, but over time the risks of permanently warping the adjacent area on the hood go up significantly, to say nothing of the nuts coming loose. Aluminum is not as ductile as steel (i.e. has a shorter elastic range before permanent deformation sets in).

Ben, I agree with you that over time it might cause some issues.

I guess I better start keeping my MF towel in the door carpartment and not the trunk!!

Its in the manual.

Closing luggage compartment lid and engine compartment lid

• Lower the lid and close it.
• Push the lid closed with the palm of your hand in the area of the lock.
Check that the lid has correctly engaged in the lock.

The latch / lock is nowhere near the Crest
I've witnessed the aluminum hood distort when people press the crest.

They covered this at 997 dealer training and on the "Perfect Delivery CD".

Many years ago the proper place to push down to secure the front hood was the Porsche badge. But now the latch is much closer to the front. I recommend a place with open palms down between the crest and the front of the hood, and with both hands (if free) to distribute the pressure.

it's a 8mm nut. Often the emblems are removed when the dealer does the delivery polishing of the hood. Just be careful when you retighten it because the pins that are connected to the hood crest are only solderd to the back of the emblem and should not be overtightened, they can twist of pretty easy. Then its a real pain in the *** to get them out. Whenever you feel it snugging up thats just about good enough.

A funny thing happened to me reguarding this. When I went to pick my car up I walked up to it and the Crest was missing altogether. The salesperson called down to the detail shop and wounldnt ya know, nobody knew where it went. Parts was closed by now, so we just stole one off of another car. Dont rag on the salesman, he is a good freind and was busy before I arrived and hadnt yet had a chance to look it over.

PS-I actually am a new member of this forum as about 4 days ago and now a proud owner of an new 2S. This is also my first post, so hopefully I was able to provide a little info.
