Your Sunroof

No sunroof needed
I never drive at speeds where it is anything but a nuisance, and that doesn't mean I drive that fast. As others have said, it's a noisy bugger. I'd go 'no sunroof' if I could do it again.

Right now, with over a month of 100+ degree heat; I use is most in vent mode when it is parked to vent out heat. I open it some mornings or late evenings. When it is cooler, I use it a lot more. In my 79' S/C, I use the sunroof a lot more due to the poor ventilation and A/C in those early cars. I know where you are going...would I own one without it? No. Being a steel single plane sunroof with aluminum rails, it adds less than 25 lbs to the car. I have the entire sunroof assembly out of my 79' and you will be surprised at how light it really is. Some of the larger glass sunroofs with sunshades (dual Panarama in the Mini) add an additional 100 lbs. The Targa is built off the convertible platform and hence why it is 200 lbs heavier. The sunroof is easily worth it for having the the ability to keep the interior cooler on a hot day.

Use mine daily. If I find myself over 70 mph, I'll close it and go to tilt / vent mode. Yeah, I'd probably pay extra for it.
I wouldn't want a sunroof in a GT3, however. <g>

Interesting thought. My last 3 Cars had sunroofs as part of the car/packages, and for some reason I wanted them. But for the last 10 years, I have rarely opened them. I do however pull back the shade in the wintermonths to get some solar heat in the car, and also to get more light in the car during the day. Now that I think about it, if I were charged for the sunroof, I would opt against it. (But if it were 'free', I would not delete it.
The other question that I have is whether the GT3 enthusiasts are upset about the sunroof because of the saftey affects (then a lot of sports cars would be in trouble) or because of the weight of the glass/motor. If the weight is the issue, how much heavier is the glass compaired to the steel, and how hard would it be to get rid of the motor (to save weight) and keep the glass?

GT3 enthusiasts are upset about the added weight, reduced structural rigidity, reduced headroom, and I imagine safety to some extent...although it would have to be a unique wreck to have the sunroof be the critical factor. However, the primary reason everybody is upset is that Porsche has chosen a minimal increase in profit rather than acknowledge the hardest-core enthusiasts of the marque and also dilute the GT3 and RS brand image.

Use it almost all the time. I would have spec'd it if it were not standard. Driving down TN's windies, leafy mountain roads... roof open ahhh lovely!

would rather have the headroom.
i wanted to delete but couldn't. wouldn't order it.
997 gt3 with sunroof is an insult to porsche's heritage and the spirit of the car.
GIVE US THE CHOICE PCNA!

I never use it. Sunroof is a totally useless "non-option" in a Porsche Coupe! I would NEVER order a car with one if it was truly an option, even if it was a "no charge" option.
