That's funny.

Actually when I think of sport chrono in the context of Pulp Fiction I think of The Watch, Butch's watch, that was personally delivered by Capt. Koons after smuggling it out of 'Nam in a particular body cavity. ... Great movie.

If DSG is that good, then how come the high performance models of Audi (RS4 / RS6) do not use such technology?

I'm sure you'll see it in future generations. The current platforms were not designed for it.

This is quite an interesting post.

I drove an SMG car on during my visit to BMW's performance center in NC, along a pretty stellar route through the blue ridge mountains. Hated it. Wished the car was a manual.

What is it about DSG that makes it so much better than SMG? Is it the immediacy?

DSG is used in A3 and GTI whereas SMGII is used in M3 and M5. Like I said in my earlier post, if DSG is that good, then how come they are not used in the high performance models like RS4 / RS6.

Frayed,

DSG is impressive in that shifts are just so quick, yet so smooth, every time. No need to mess around with the dozen or so shift programs SMG has. And DSG always rev-matches downshifts; if I remember correctly, SMG only does it in the harsher programs.

In automatic mode, DSG behaves like an automatic...nice and smooth...great for sitting in LA traffic. SMG is awful in automatic mode.

I will say that part of what made DSG so impressive was the drivetrain as a whole; with such quick shifts, even when driving moderately, the 2.0T's turbo was never off the boost. And you have the option of using paddles or the gear lever, unlike Porsche's current Tiptronic that has neither...just the silly buttons on the wheel.

thx.

i corrected my post above to clarify that I'm coming from a manual mindset. . . did not find the smg from bmw to be terribly engaging.

I found the smg to lack the immediacy and directness of the manual, as well as the mechanical engagement of a stick. You know, the man/machine connection vs. the video game experience of the smg.

The dsg is that much better?

Here is what I think.

I do not think manual can be replaced for the individuals who like control and involvement like me although I am also open-minded about technology. I can not own a manual daily driver so my previous car was SMGII and now my C4S is TipS

SMGII is not an automatic and take away the clutch pedal (it still has the clutch), you have all the control. I also hated it until I get used to it, it has a learning curve. If you are driving crazy like I do or take her up to the track it will satisfy you. I never used its automatic mode but it was very jerky and predictable like it has been learning to drive a manual car.

On the other hand the current DSG is superior to TipS (junk in a car in this caliber) but nowhere close to SMGII in my opinion if performance is the priority. If comfort than I would say in my daily driving conditions: 6-speed<SMGII<DSG=TipS.

Once again these are my opinions.

In that case, is it fair to say that DSG is something like an advance Tip S (i.e. still an automatic) whereas the SMG would be a manual with an electronic clutch?
