Actually, the DSG model was developed for "the Gimp", who had a hard time with the clutch. They are going to call the DSG model with full carbon "The Royale", and if you add sport chrono, that is the "Royale with cheese".

Have DSG in my A3 2.0T-APR+Hiflow cat. Can't have enough fun with it-delusions of F1.......runs like crazy.

DSG haters should find a way behind the wheel of an A3 or GTI. I'm a die hard manual transmission luddite...I get more pleasure than I probably should from a perfectly rev-matched downshift; never even considered SMG on my M3...but a day in an A3 loaner has me convinced that there is a better way.

this will help their sales I think, alot of people (like me) were very interested in this. I would guess that Tips mostly sell in the Cabs, and that sales of Tip equipped coupes are below expectations.

I doubt it. It may not be necessary, but I think there will be a decent audience for manual transmissions for at least another 10 - 20 years. You may only find it on cars like the GT3 that also dispense with turbos and AWD to give a more authentic driving experience.

Besides, people said manuals were going to vanish when automatics came out and they are still around.

Yeah, Ron, but that's because the manual has definite advantages over the auto namely, better fuel economy and better performance (up to now). With the advent of the DSG all that goes away.

True. And CD's have clear advantage over vinyl albums, but you can still find NEW release vinyl albums and high end turntables.

Some people who love driving are simply going to want to have a traditional manual and clutch for the enjoyment of pushing that clutch pedal and rowing the gears.

I think you'll see manuals vanish from most car makes, but companies like Porsche as well as other exotics would likley offer manuals for quite some time to cater to those who love the sensory delight of driving a traditional manual transmission.

I wouldn't worry too much about the bugs. Porsche did some work with Audi on the DSG. The Veyron has a DSG gear box and for an up-market beetle it puts down a lot of power to the road. I went for a manual 997 because the Tiptonic felt like 1980s technology compared to the DSG on my Audi. The Turbo auto box was a stop gap solution while the DSG was under development. If I had a turbo on order (highly unlikely unless I win a lottery), I would cancel and wait a year. This is thje most important development from Porsche for years. Well since it tried to destroy the brand with SUVs.
