I spoke to the SmartTop developer himself just now (Stephan) and he was extremely helpful. I am going to try a few of his suggestions.

I've got a call into Porsche regarding your problem but probably won't hear back until Monday. I just can't believe this device can't be reset. Once reset, you should be able to set the convenience feature you like. I'd still like to know what went wrong even if you get it working please let the rest of us know what you guys find.

The truth is these things are electronic devices and they are subject to...well unexplainable intermittent failures. Mine did exactly what you describe. I sent the unit back to Stephan..NDF...and had my top reset by a stealer for...$240. After getting a warranty replaced unit from Stephan I have had 0 problems. And he new unit has better functionality. At least they stand behind their product!!!

What do you mean by "top reset?" Did you manually close/open the top, and what exactly did they do?

What was wrong with your unit, and when did you buy it?

Why didn't you disconnect the battery first?

To reset any electronic device you just have to unplug the power!

In the manual there is a note that after operating the top manually, you have to reset it by a dealer. But that's not needed because you can just disconnect the battery to reset the top controller (after a top controller failure).

I haven't tried it by myself, but that's what a friend of mine told me, he had a top controller failure and did the reset -> everything worked again!

I tried absolutely everything I could...I removed the smartTop unit and I guess when I plugged the stock cables back in I didn't get a good connection. The stealer probably just re-plugged it in...I don't think they did anything else...though they did say they "reset the unit". Stephan did not find anything wrong with the unit (I've had it for over 1 year) hence NDF...no defect found. He still replaced it and it works great.
