Default Oil Change?

The manual states 20K or 2years before the 1st oil change. The dealer “suggests” 10K, and some on this board suggest a change after break in. Which is it?

Why would Porsche, the engine’s maker and the one responsible for warranty repairs, recommend 20K...if it needed change sooner?

You cannot change oil too frequently. I would suggest that the first one be done around 3000 miles and then maybe 7500 thereafter but definately at least once a year.

I have a habit of changing the oil in all the toys between the first 750 and 1000 miles.
I had the 997S done at 757 miles.

I changed mine at 2005 miles and will change it every 6000 from now on. Cheapest insurance you can buy for engine life...

hi Gary. I know, I know....but does anyone have an explanation of why Porsche would recommend something less than correct for their engines?

Can't explain why they would want contaminents circulating through the engine for 20K, no. I believe its simply that they are trying (as BMW does) to show a reduced TCO and that synthetics "can" still lubricate at 20K, especially since the car is designed to use a quart of oil every few thousand miles.

I'd LOVE to hear their logic though!

Gary, do you do the oil change yourself or take it to the dealer? What's the cost at the dealer or DIY?

Well, I had every intention of doing it myself but I had a Tech Inspection scheduled at the local shop and it hit right on 2005 miles so I had them do it. They actually used my oil as they had no 0W-40 on hand. With filter I believe it would cost about $150 or so to have it done (there), bet a dealer is close to $200. I WILL do it myself next time, I bought the oil filter wrench and the proper allen wrench socket for the drain plug. Filters are around $15 from Porsche and the oil (8.5 Qts) is about $60...

Thanks Gary - I was hoping it was a DIY job. Where did you pick up the tools? Did you get them all from Porsche, oil as well? Sorry for all the questions, this will be my first Porsche oil change, just want to make sure it right.

0W-40 Mobil 1 Triplesyn - only place I could find it was at http://www.autobarn.net/oil44877.html . If you have an Auto Parts store near you they may order it special. Get 2 cases (12 qts).

Filter - I bought several OEM at the Porsche dealer, but you may find them online. They are the same filter as the 996 took. Part # is 996 107 225 53.

Oil Filter wrench (Porsche Part #000 721 920 40 if your dealer will sell you one, mine wouldn't!) http://www.performanceproducts.com/P...hicle_ID=25153

These tools any Sears/Auto Parts/Home Depot store will have -
27mm Socket to go on bottom of oil filter wrench to turn it.
8mm Allen wrench for drain plug (get it in 3/8" or 1/2" socket)

There is a DIY section on RennTech that walks you through the whole thing also.. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...iy&code=diy_oc

I got some 0W-40 at AutoZone, but not all of the stores carry it. You may have to call all the AZ's in your town. It was $5.29.

How can you see how dirty your oil is without a dipstick? I guess you can't!

I am going to get mine changed next week...2800 miles!

Right, close to $200 at the dealer. I'm sure an independant could do it for cheaper and of course doing yourself would save some extra.

You just can't work on you're own car like you could before computers took over. So it's nice to be able to do some things, even if it is just an oil change.
