I changed my oil last week for the first time, and someone here on the board was kind enough to send me this info:

It was actually extremely easy. My only big surprise is that after 5000 miles, my oil was BLACK and was very very low. Good luck.

0W-40 Mobil 1 Triplesyn - only place I could find it was at http://www.autobarn.net/oil44877.html . If you have an Auto Parts store near you they may order it special. Get 2 cases (12 qts).

Filter - I bought several OEM at the Porsche dealer, but you may find them online. They are the same filter as the 996 took. Part # is 996 107 225 53.

Oil Filter wrench (Porsche Part #000 721 920 40 if your dealer will sell you one, mine wouldn't!) http://www.performanceproducts.com/...ehicle_ID=25153

These tools any Sears/Auto Parts/Home Depot store will have -
27mm Socket to go on bottom of oil filter wrench to turn it.
8mm Allen wrench for drain plug (get it in 3/8" or 1/2" socket)

There is a DIY section on RennTech that walks you through the whole thing also.. http://www.renntech.org/forums/inde...diy&code=diy_oc

So they can say the car is environmentally friendly and get brownie points from whichever government is in the country they want to sell in. So they can impress the buyers thinking this car really won't be much of a PITA service-wise. New synthetic oils DO last a long time but Porsche doesn't care if the engine starts to wear out prematurely at 100k miles. Stuff like this. Same reasoning for the lack of a spare; while they convince the buyer no spare is needed.

I was under the impression that Porsche does NOT pay for any oil changes... did my dealer mislead me?

No, JCF was under the impression that service was included, must have been ingrained from his BMW/Jag days!

My understanding is that they cover the cost of the oil change at 20k. My oil change was at 8K, so it was not part of the covered service.

Are you sure about that?

I know that Porsche stated for its air cooled cars that 1 quart per 600 miles is the limit for over consumption, but a 911, at least an air cooled version, should not consume oil if it is operating correctly. 1600 miles since my last oil change and no measurable oil consumption.

Seriously, it is not necessary to pay to have the oil and filter changed... unless you want to have someone else do it.
How many filters does the engine require? My 993 needs two. Does the 997 only use one now?

How much oil do you need to do a change?

I was talking to a friend the other day who works for Fuchs and he explained every new Porsche leaves the factory with Fuchs oil ONLY. However, Mobil gives Porsche a lot of money for advertising and pushing their brand so Porsche endorse it!

Yeah, you guys are right, unless the car comes with break in oil from the factory. I'm not sure if Porsches do, but it would be a mistake to remove the break in oil before the car is 100% broken in especially to a synthetic. I have known of people that changed the oil in their cars too soon (none of the cars were Porsches, though) and had minor problems because the cars weren't broken in. One example was a guy that had his engine replaced by a mechanic I used to know, and then brought it the car back and had them rebuild the engine because it had problems. After they rebuilt the engine he said "I'm going to change the oil to a synthetic after 500 miles" which is what he had done before and what caused his engine problems as he failed to heed the warning on the bottles of most synthetics which state (something along the lines of) 'do not use during break in period as the engine will never be properly broken in with synthetic oil'.

The cars are only warrantied for 50k, right? The problems caused by not changing your oil with sufficient frequency generally do not manifest themselves until after 50k anyway.

I thought that was a wheel used on older 911s.

Hi,
yes FUCHS are a Porsche Approved oil (one model) and one of the oldest producers of ester based synthetic lubricants - since the mid 1930s

FUCHS are a highly respected supplier of specialised lubricants in the trucking, mining and related Commercial fields

FUCHS GT1 0w-20 oil was used in the Porsche Cup series in this country

The factory fill is Mobil 1 0w-40 as I believe it

Regards
