speaking of outsourcing; was at the body shop yesterday (don't ask, a !@*&%$ Volvo SUV driver backed over the left front fender of my 996) and saw a 996 tip trans on a stand. It says Mercedes Benz on the case.

I was on B & M website recently and there was a note requesting a donor 997 to allow them to design & build the Short Shifter for that model. Obviously this is an old note, but it would seem to indicate that they probably did not make the Porsche OEM shifter.

VB997
I would appreciate some tips on getting into the shift mechanism.
How do you remove the shift boot assembly from the housing?
How do you remove the shift **** from the lever?
Any other information you can provide on installing the OEM Sport Shifter would be appreciated.

What about the EVO aluminum shift link in place of the OEM plastic one?

I have the OEM short shifter in my new 997 and it is awesome. My B&M in my 996 was much notchier and not as smooth to operate....

It is true! from the B&M website

B&M Racing & Performance Named Supplier to Porsche AG Worldwide

B&M is the supplier to Porsche AG for vehicle production line installed high performance precision manual shifters in Porsches 911 series cars. All 911 series vehicles including the Carrera 2, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo, GT2 and GT3 cars have the option of being ordered with a Sport Shifter for factory installation in Germany. These shifters may be ordered through Porsche dealers worldwide for installation by the dealer or by the consumer. These units feature B&M’s shorter shifting design and the precise throws as found in B&M part number 45135 that is available to all B&M distribution.

Porsche is promoting the benefits of B&M short shifters which is the best endorsement possible for the B&M shifters you sell. Online forums are buzzing with the recognition that B&M shifters for Porsches are the undisputed correct choice - even for Porsche AG!

MJones, did you see the pictures that VB997 put up showing the actual shifters close up? It's readily apparent that they are NOT the same. I 'm not doubting what it says on the B&M site, but pictures don't lie (unless VB997 is intentionally deceiving us, which I highly doubt!).

Am I missing something obvious (wouldn't be the 1st time!)?

I think the website is accurate, the 996 units were identical. They may make a seperate unit for the 997 oem/aftermarket. That is not uncommon.

The B&M 45135 is the same one sold by Porsche for the 996/Boxster. The Porsche short shift for the 997 is different according to the pictures - as it is now blue plastic - so it is not a 45135.

I cannot tell from the B&M press release if they claim to make the 997 short shift. I hope they do and will start selling a cheaper clone.

What I found interesting is the fact a 997 owner used the 45135, so the shift tower must be the same as a 996.

It's possible…

The B&M shift kit I installed was an older version as the box, directions etc. did not ref. the 997 and all pictures/directions were based on the 996...Maybe B&M has a new 997 shift kit that has just come out...when I did mine there was only one that would work for the 997.

I would never intentionally post anything on this forum that I knew was incorrect. The photos were taken in my garage where I personally installed the shift kits...Insinuating otherwise is humorous…I have better things to do with my time.

Incidentally, the intention of my original post was to offer help to new car owners considering a shift kit, not to debate the origins or have my credibility challenged…

The B&M 996 SSK and the OEM unit are virtually identicle. The 997 versions look different, but B&M could still be the manufacturer. To the original post, yes for the small price delta the OEM is the way to go.

We are a large stocking dealer for B&M. When the 997 came out, the standard B&M unit worked in it just fine, and also for the 987/Cayman. However, the 997 Turbo was another story. It was not a shifter issue, it was a BEARING issue. We reported back to B&M immediately on two 997 TT installs that required a little machining on the bushings. They went back to R&D and developed a separate bushings kit for the 997 Turbo, however, the shifter itself is EXACTLY the same one that it has been all along.

AND WE carry it at $199 EVERY DAY.
