JASCLASS is right. Any one that doesn't understand the truth of what he is saying is being a troll.

Sure, you can after market a turbo on a civic and make it faster than a 911. That was not what he was saying. A car manufacture doesn't release two new sports cars and have the cheaper one out perform the more expensive one...AND in fact we all know it isn't true. The boxster does NOT out perform the 997S.

The problem is Top Gear posted a lap time for the 997S in the POURING rain. It does not in anyway compare to the time on a dry track.

Billy Bob and JAS,

Of course the 997S time is slower than it would be on drive pavement, I said as much in my original message. However, the 1.28.7 time the Boxster S posted falls in the following list:

Ferrari F60 Enzo - 1.19.0
Porsche Carerra GT - 1.19.8
Mercedes McLaren SLR - 1.20.9
Ford GT - 1.21.9
Ferrari 360 CS - 1.22.3
Porsche GT3 RS - 1.22.3
Murcielago - 1.23.7
Zonda - 1.23.8
Koenigsegg - 1.23.9
Noble - 1.25.0
Gallardo - 1.25.8
Lotus Exige - 1.26.4
Chevrolet Corvette - 1.26.8
Porsche 911 GT3 - 1.27.2
TVR 350c - 1.27.5
BMW M3 CSL - 1.28.0
Dodge Viper SRT-10 - 1.28.5
MG SV - 1.28.6
Porsche Boxster S 1.28.7 (BTW, lightly wet as the video shows, not completely dry)
Porsche 911 Carrera S - 1.28.9 (very wet)
Mitsubishi Evo VIII - 1.28.9
BMW Alpine Z8 - 1.29.0
Mercedes CL65 - 1.29
Alfa 3.7 GTA - 1.30.0
Subaru Impreza STI - 1.30.1
Aston Martin DB7 GT - 1.30.4
Audi S4 - 1.30.9
Porsche 911 turbo - 1.31.0
Vauxhall VX 220 turbo - 1.31.3
Honda NSX Type R - 1.31.6
BMW M3 - 1.31.8
Nissan 350Z - 1.31.8
Mazda RX8 - 1.31.8
Ford Focus RS - 1.32.2
Lotus Esprit V8 - 1.32.5
Audi TT V6 - 1.32.7
MG ZT - 1.33
Noble - 1.33.1
Mercedes SL 55 AMG - 1.33.2
Volkswagen Golf R32 - 1.33.2
Volvo S60R - 1.35.0
Ferrari 575 - 1.35.2
Alfa 147 GTA - 1.35.6
Lotus Elise - 1.35.6
Aston Martin Vanquish - 1.36.2
Renault Clio v6 - 1.36.2
Honda Civic Type R - 1.36.5
Saab 95 hot aero - 1.37.9
Mazzer - 1.38.0
Bowler Wildcat - 1.39.4
Bentley Arnarge - 1.40.8
Overfinch - 1.44.0

That's some pretty serious company the Boxster S is keeping and as far as I can tell the 996 Twin Turbo was tested in the dry. As someone pointed out you can concoct a course that favors one type of car over another (HP vs. Handling) but given that even the best lap time is over 1:19, the course can't be a bunch of cones in a parking lot. In fact it is the same test track that has some nicely designed curves courtesy of Lotus. It isn't the high bank of Daytona, but it isn't a parking lot either. HP must play some part or the Mercedes SLR wouldn't be so high up there IMHO.

Like I said, take it for what it is worth, a sign that the Boxster S is improved over the previous version

Typical underdog attitude. The underdog is always right. Most of us are underdogs right?

i was at limerock this summer and met someone with a supercharged boxster-s. I cant tell you how fast the car was thru a tight track. the car was setup with good suspension, roll cage, gt3 seats and supercharged. obviously my TT was faster on the straight, but it was impressive.

And my point was all those "tests" were in uncontrolled conditions. That's the equivalent of the guy in the slammed Civic saying because he once spanked a 911 (whose driver was on his cellphone...) from a stop sign, a Civic can beat a 911. Just because Top Gear uses a "professional" driver doesn't mean to say the tests are professional. But believe what you want.

<SARCASM>
OMG! Your right, I didn't see that it was "a little wet" when the Boxster ran. WOW, I am canceling my order for my 997s to get the better Boxster.
</SARCASM>

If you want to convince people about how great the Boxster is, then post information about specs or controlled race times.

You can fill in the actual numbers and convince us all.

BoxsterS 997s
0-60
skidpad
1/4mile
...etc.

JAS, Billy Bob, and Le Chef,
Ghost Rider has not said the Boxster S out performs 997 S. That is so obvious. Why some are taking his original post as an implication the cheaper Boxster S > more expensive 997 S is beyond me! To top it off with statements such as “Cheaper models don’t out perform the more expensive ones, that’s how it works” and “Dream on if you think Porsche will market a cheaper car that will beat a more expensive one” is just plain arrogant. There are many undeniable examples within the Porsche family of cars where this logic, if you can call it that, does not hold true. Boxster S vs. 997 S is not one of the examples, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Think about a ’93 RS America vs. ’93 C4. RS was the cheapest, also lighter and faster and more desirable if you ask me.

Think about the 928, built from 1978 to 1995 as a top range model cost wise. Was it always the best performing Porsche all those years, or was there a cheaper 911 or two that would beat it #’s wise? If performance is a function of cost as you state . . .

Porsche may very well market such a car again. A Boxster S Coupe Club Sport like model would be interesting

Mike read the title of the post. "Boxster S faster than 997 S "

'93 RS America and the 1993 C4 are different versions of the SAME CAR. Not two different models. Virtually every C4/C4S will be straight line out performed by the C2/C2S. You don't need to go back to 1993.

This whole discussion is stupid. I don't think anyone including the people from the "other side" believe the boxster outperforms the 997s so what ever. This was a troll post to begin with....

"Ghost Rider has not said the Boxster S out performs 997 S. That is so obvious. "

Then what his point? Why post at all with figures from Top Gear? If the point was not to show the figures, then why bother posting? Seems like a waste of time to me.

Sometimes it just boils down to the right car for the right track! Big power and brakes for big straight aways, better handling for lots of twisties...

FYI the 996 TT and the GT3 (not RS) times were also in the wet. I agree the top gear times are pointless given that some cars are tested in the wet and some in the dry.

a little off topic, but a Volvo S60R is faster than a Ferrari 575? That's way more impressive than the Boxster S and 997S comparison.

Dude lighten up, you have no sense of humor whatsoever. If you aren't happy that the Boxster S performed well in the Top Gear test and aren't a Porsche-fan then please turn in your keys. The comparison in the Top Gear test wasn't between the Boxster S and 997 S it was between the Boxster S and the SLK and you should be happy for Porsche that the Boxster S beat the SLK by more than 4 seconds, although the SLK was NOT the AMG version, so that test would be more insteresting IMHO.

That's what it boils down to, not whether or not you believe something is the gospel truth and scientifically irrefutable fact for all time, or whether something is simply "interesting"...

I, for one, found the Boxster S's results to be interesting...
