Will 997 have aux audio input/satellite radio option?
 

If I were to get a 911 it would replace my 330Ci, which has integrated Sirius satellite radio, auxillary input for MP3 players, and an Alpine CD and MP3-CD changer that's nearly plug and play with OEM. Stepping up the driving dynamic to a Porsche would be great, but I gotta say that satellite radio and other audio source options added a lot of fun for me, too. I understand that without replacing the audio system, it's not possible to hardwire in satellite or audio in the 996--FM modulation is the only option.

Does anyone know if the 997 will be more open with respect to auxillary audio input or if Porsche will offer a satellite option?

There is a phone setup option, which integrates with the audio system. I think it's a matter of getting someone with access to documentation from the audio system supplier. The 991 also has an upgrade to "Bose" audio system, so there's more than one audio system configuration. It's still not clear if the DVD nav system will impact having an in-dash CD changer (which might still be a box in the front trunk ... not great.)

Sirius/XM is a good start but why do they have to make it so impossible to easily get your iPod to work? FM Modulators in Boston don't work very well and that's about the only option there is.

Try the new Transpod FM modulator, the original had sound quality problems and it sucked, but the new one is better. Not that it is perfect and you still need to hard wire you iPod if you want ultimate sound quality, but the new transpod has good sound quality and almost no installation. It is $80 at Best Buy so it is not a big deal to try and if you still dont find it acceptable you can go the hardwire route.

This just seems dumb on Porsches part, most other car manufacturers now have a Sat Radio option and many have MP3 options as well. I understand the German mantra of no cup holder no radio in a sports car, but seriously why they can't make it an "option" for people is beyond me... I suspect someone in the in-car entertainment group at Porsche is still drafting with a T-Square... that is assuming there IS an in-car entertainment group at Porsche... ;)

Ghost, good point, Porsche should make this stuff optional.

By the same token things like air conditioning, power windows, leather interiors, and power cabrio tops should be optional as well for those who don't want the added weight, cost and complexity in their "sports car".

Why can't Porsche just add a little bit extra to the cost of each car ordered "ala carte"?

FWIW, BMW is now offering an adapter on some models to interface an iPod with the factory audio system

I have a 997.2 which does have 1) USB input where I plug in a flash drive and play mp3. And 2) has a aux input where I have a Blu tooth rcvr plugged in. However when I use the blue tooth I unplug the flash as the rcvr powers from the USB port.
P.s. - the PCM in my car has sirus built in though I don't subscribe
