Now that Mauer (ex-Saab) is taking over design from Harm Lagaay, presumably we can expect the 998 to take a different route stylewise.
Better or worse?

I read that Butzi Porsche drew up a design for the Cayenne, but it was rejected by the company. It would be interesting to see. I bet Butzi's design was more radical, and Porsche steered it in a conservative direction.
We can't really blame Porsche for aping the 993 with the 997. For years enthusiasts have been touting the 993 as the best looking 911. Porsche has been listening, and they gave us what we said we wanted!

they didn't give us what we wanted other then the rounded headlights.....what we wanted were those 911 corrected photoshopped photos....now that was a car I'd be proud to own...and also we wanted a new engine that didn't have the RMS issue.....they didn't hit on that either.....overall 997 . ....just say no!
