Ticking - Typical Obsessive Porsche Owner or....?
Hello my dearest internet friends,
I just brought my 2009 997.2 C2S 71,000km out of winter hibernation.
And it ticks.
It's always ticked. Search for 997.2 ticking and you are greeted by mobs of angry fellow 997.2 owners lambasting you with, "All the DFI engines tick. It adds character."
It doesn't, but I accept your opinion.
So it ticks. It's always ticked. Now it ticks louder.
Other fun Backstory facts:
1. End of the 2022 season, I cracked a coil or my camshaft position sensor failed. Not 100% sure, so I threw parts at it. It was probably due for coils anyway. (error code will be edited later). Replaced all ignition coils and plugs, and the bank-2 camshaft position sensor while I was in there.
2. Replace serpentine belt (waste of time, old one was pristine).
3. Replace motor mounts with Rein mounts, injected with 3M Windo Weld (thank you Car Fanatic).
4. Pre-storage oil change with your personal favorite and best-ever (just search!) oil - Mobil 1 Euro Spec 0W-40 and some Liqui Moly Cera Tec.
5. Ticking follows engine speed.
EDIT:
Codes:
P0023 - Upper limit value exceeded
P0003 - No signal/communication
P0003 - Upper limit value exceeded
P0013 - Implausible signal
Question:
Did my Cera Tec or new mounts act to amplify my tick? Or is my car about explode? Internet opinion wanted.

The noise on my 2009 C2S recently got louder. Noticed the sound after changing out AOS and headers, I was pretty freaked out. Turns out it's the EVAP purge valve ticking, maybe it's on the way out. Hard to describe but it's more of a tap than a tick.
But otherwise, I get the same ticking noise at the volume that I hear from my 2013 BRZ.
I have the RSS mounts + FunctionFirst trans mount inserts - they didn't change the engine sound, just added slightly more vibration.
@64.5k miles - drove around 2k miles under my ownership.

The 997.2 fuel injectors tick as loud as any engine I've ever heard in my life, it freaked me out at first. Get a mechanic's stethoscope and probe around to figure out where it's coming from. Put it right on the fuel rail and see if that's it. If not, search around until you find it.
Yes, you are being the typical obsessive Porsche owner (amazing how many Porsche owners wear that as some sort of demented badge of honor), but take control of it through knowledge. The car is supposed to be a joy, not something that keeps you up at night.

Do you find the noise sometimes sporadic? I swear I have the same noise on the LHS of my engine (9A1-X51) - as you stated - more of a tap than a tick, but on some days, no sound, just regular DFI and valvetrain noises. Once each 5 drives, no tap sound. Sometimes there on start, sometimes not.

Yea, that electronic arcing sound that starts around 30 seconds after startup... evap valve???
My engine is just a bit noisy... it just is. When I shut it down sometimes it rattles... it ticks, pings... whatever. I think this 9A1 engine is a noisy one. I do think, some say deluded, that if I change my oil at say 6 or 7K miles, new oil will quiet the engine. If I do it at 5K, I hear no difference. Always was this way.
Peace

Of course that's the fear, isn't it.
On Sunday I started and ran it twice, looped around the block. It was garage cleaning day, not driving day, so it was very limited time with the car, but it certainly ticked the entire time.
Started it this morning. Tick. Moved the stroller out of the way. Less tick. Popped the decklid to get a video. Almost no tick.
It might be that purge valve. Now that I'm being overly attentive, I hear a whooshing left of the throttle body. It's probably always been there.
Any way. I'll check and clear my broken-coil codes today and update. Thanks all!

Water cooled flat sixes sound like a bag of marbles on the best of days especially on cold start up's ..... don't worry about it ..just drive the thing. Most will quiet down after a good hard blast ..they hate to putter in urban traffic .
