Is Bore Scoring hyped up to be worse than it really is?

I don't know, I love my 997.2 but on Tuesday I was invited to the Porsche Driving Experience at Road America. I was able to drive 2 laps in a brand new 992 GTS 4.0 and a C4GTS 4.0. I'm trying to decide which of my kids don't get to go to college 🤔.
It was that good.
3 CGTS and 1 4GTS. The 4 GTS had rear axle steering. Felt slightly slower than the 2wd. Could have all been in my head though.
The cars were amazing. The speed, the grip and the 4.0 sound out the back. And to get my first time in a place like Road America where you could open it up, I'll be chasing that high for the rest of my life

Yes, Road America is in Wisconsin. It's quite the track, 14 turns and just over 4 miles, one of the longest in NA. Most of the major racing circuits come through there.
The Porsche Driving Experience event was invitation only. I have no idea how I got on the list, just received an email with the invitation and I accepted. It was a GTS event. Drove the Macan, Cayenne, 911, and Taycan. All GTS variants. The Taycan was on an autocross course. While all were impressive, the 992 GTS was the highlight for me. I had dreams about it that night afterward. Not kidding. This was on the full road course tailing a Porsche instructer from Skip Barber. I have to keep telling myself....I love my 997,I love my 997, I love my 997. I feel like I cheated on my wife. I've never driven a GT car, I'm not sure how they could be better, though they are.

Luck of the draw...
Like all things in life, it's easy to think it's all hype until it happens to you/yours. My 2006 997.1 C4S was good till about 70k miles, although it did burn some oil (within accepted limits). By contrast, my friend's exact same, but lower mileage model didn't burn a drop. The threads below call out two early/major signs - sooting up on tail pipes and a ticking sound. From my unfortunate experience, I think I can now pretty much diagnose the problem in a few secs - visual inspection of driver's side tailpipes for soot/carbon, then swing round to the opposite side and listen to the passenger bank of cylinders - you'll hear a ticking sound that you won't hear on the driver's side. Either one is easy to spot, although I would say the sooting up precedes any ticking sounds by up to 5-10k miles. So that's the one to look out for although it's obviously not easy to catch if the 997 you're inspecting has just been cleaned The ticking sound, if present, you cannot miss. I have to say that after having taken great care of the car with regular oil changes (every 6k miles) I was gutted. Not to mention out of pocket. Now I have a 991.1 that I'm enjoying even more. I loved the 997.1, really, but despite what others might say, I would find the extra $$ for a 991 - huge upgrade in my opinion. Last point, if I had to point at any cause, and from all the research I did, I would say that lots of short runs and letting the car idle to warm up before driving off increases the propensity. Basically, prolonged rich mixture with the possible dodgy jet cleansing the cylinder wall of it's oil coating increases wear. From everything I've read, it's almost always the right/passenger bank of cylinders. Good luck

I really do think the key questions are around what can you do/how long can you drive it once bore scoring has been identified.
I know there are several of us here who discovered their engines had bore scoring. It seems like we should be able to come together to document our collective experience with the process:
Is it worth setting up a new/poll thread to track the data?
Appreciate thoughts from those that have been or are dealing with the issue now.

- when was the BS first confirmed (date/mileage)?
- what preventative measure did you take?
- if you got piston slap, how long (time, mileage) between confirming the issue and getting piston slap?
- How did you resolve the issue?
- How much did it cost?
- How much time/mileage since resolution?
- what has your experience been?
Is it worth setting up a new/poll thread to track the data?

Burning Brakes
My 997.1 has light scoring on 4 and 6, soot on the left exhaust pipes, and uses one quart of oil about 2500 miles. I am driving it until it coughs up blood before it is disassembled for a rebuilt short block. My original logistical plan of doing the rebuild next year just blew up (side story of having to replace my daughter's Audi A3 this month instead of next year) so I am going to let the 997 ride on until it dies. I used to think that it is overhyped but it happens to my car. However, I am in the camp of "I'll drive it til it dies"

There was speculation that they might put the 718 4.0 in a 992.2 but I thought that was shot down?

I did not bother to comment before... but you are right, not 4L and of course it's a turbocharged design. The only 4L NA engines are in the GT3, GT4, 718 Cayman GTS, 718 Boxster GTS, 718 Spyder, and RS versions.
And another point. The 911 GTS is not a GTx car, no, not at all.

Short answer to the answer. Nope. it is really a disaster.
I am avoiding any non GT3 engined Porsche and frankly, with the ocmplexity of the latest GT3 engines...maybe those too. Taycan or nothing.
Had a 996 TT ....had coolant pipe (glued? wtf Porsche) issues...and a vacuum (21h of labor...) leak...had a 2nd gear fork error causing a rebuild ...had a slave cylinder pentosin issue on track....if these cars were another brand people would be panning them as junk. Porsche...so just "overengineered". I am frankly thinking they are overpriced junk, well made junk, or perhaps just fatally flawed cars. It is like BMW v10 engines....There, I will say it, the emperor is not wearing any clothing and these cars are no better than any other overly complex cars. Sure they are designed to be desireable...but I pity the fool who buy one over 3 years old now...they are also way overpriced.

I'm keeping my 2 997s, but 3 of the last 4 Pors he's I've bought have all been older ones - 2 928s and a 944. The quality just isn't there anymore and I have no interest in the Tech. If I get another, it will be a 993 turbo or 964 speedster.
