Three Wheelin'
Mine is at FSI now, due in October and I’m coming in at just under 35k but I got a Stage II with every possible performance option and some other “while you are there” upgrades.
But….I also picked up mine several years ago when the 997 was essentially at the bottom of the market for 32k. So at the end of the day with all the other things I’ve done to it, I will be around 71k all in…not bad for a well sorted 997 with a “brand new” 4.0L FSI Stage II +. Pretty dang good value if you ask me.
But I didn’t do this to eventually sell, I love the 997 and as most of us on these forums agree that it is the sweet spot of the modern Porsche. I expect this car will forever be in my stable and an heirloom to my son.

All FSI builds include head work. My build includes modified valve springs, FSI high performance intake valve seats, stage II cylinder head with port modifications.
The other things included that most don’t include are: clutch, AOS, injectors, lifters, billet oil pump drive, billet tensioner paddle, and I am sure more that I am not mentioning

This is what i did with my FSI Stage II 4.0 this morning, the last 20k being on the new engine. It’s my dd and my short commute to and from the train station is always the best part of my day. My license plate reads “SCORED”, but almost nobody gets the play on words outside this forum.

Some engine rebuilders insist on all components of the engine being replaced with new parts rather than reusing recently replaced parts such as a brand new water pump that may have 200 miles on it for example. I guess the argument is that they don't want their rebuilt engine "contaminated" by parts they had no control over. How the part was sourced and how it was installed and maintained.
Pretty much what I was thinking too. Reading fairly recent posts on the subject, hasn't the typical rebuild cost, even for a 4.0 been somewhere in the $20K to $25K range, maybe reaching towards $30K for the very best. But $40K? May well have missed it but I can't recall reading about anyone paying anything starting with a 3...never mind a 4 for a 997 engine rebuild. Again, even for a quality 4.0 rebuild.

There have been more resale transactions involving 996 models with FSI engines than 997 as far as I've seen, though the numbers are small in both cases. As much as I think there should be a premium for a FSI rebuild, I don't think the numbers agree. Good if you are a buyer (I was) but not for the sellers.

Well, but again I don’t think we know what happens behind the scenes. I know for me personally, if I were to ever sell (again I don’t plan to) I would likely have a buyer without going to market. It would probably be someone I know from a local group/friend and price wouldn’t be a big factor, they would just know they wanted it.

Based on a one of one sample I saw on BAT, it looked like the premium on the car was about 50% of a guesstimate of the FSI build cost of that motor. Practically no performance build is ever a financial advantage for the initial buyer. The best example is this one (albeit a 996) -- Over $120k in engine build alone, sold on BAT for 64k:

Again, if all that one cares about is resale value to trade for the next car or plans on keeping their 911 for less than 5 years then yes, this is a poor financial decision and not worth it. I don’t care about resale, while not a daily, I drive mine as much as I can and could GAF about how many miles I put on it or if it will effect resale.

Apples and Oranges correlating a Methed out Turbo with a bunch of Turbo Modifications is different to me than an FSI Build. All 4.0 builds are not created equal. A 4.0 from premium builders (FSI, Hartech etc.)will eventually command a premium as time goes on and less and less 997.1s are on the road. An FSI STAGE II Road and track performer is on another level of 4.0 builds and is much, much more than a re-sleeve and nickies. So much more attention to detail and performance modifications go into a FSI Stage II. If you want to know more call FSI. A lot of what they do is proprietary info and is what sets them apart from most.
Again, if all that one cares about is resale value, then its probably the same person that barely puts on 1,500 mi a year and its a garage queen. Then yes, this is a poor financial decision and not worth it. I don’t care about resale, while not a daily, I drive mine as much as I can and could GAF about how many miles I put on it or if it will effect resale.
