Default 911 997 first days of ownership driving 700 miles.

I picked up a 06 997 Carrera S Cab with 60K miles service just done Monday in Portland OR and driving to North Carolina-

Oil Consumption- 1 Bar was not lit upon departure. After 500 Miles, 2 Bars were not lit. Added 1/3 QT to it, and the level was again, 1 bar not lit. Drove another harder 300 miles in higher elevations and higher speeds and RPM, and still ok, 1 Bar not lit.

Temps- Man this motor is cool as a cucumber, got Oil temp up once up to 220 when going up a mountain at 90MPH in 5th. Cools back down ASAP and needle settles just above the 200.. a few times when really winding it out to 6K RPM on mountain inclines it would get to 220....and come right back down. Ave outside temp was 72-82 degrees.

Water gauge just sits at 175 no matter what.

Brake Fade- none.

Tranny when cold is a bit balky until temp gauge moves up...mainly 1st & 2nd.

I took it up north of 100MPH on a straight desert flat road didnt miss a beat.

These just cruise at 85MPH in Idaho all day long...

Thats my 2 cents..

Portland OR>Newport OR>Bend OR>Boise ID> Park City Utah right now, tomorrow>Moab UT>Fri/Sat Vail CO> Sunday Denver CO> Monday KC MO>Tuesday ST Louis MO> Wed Lexington KY> Thur Smokeys>Home.

Just a tip on the oil level gauge in case you weren't already aware. It's terribly fussy and only reliable before the first start of the day as long as the car has been sitting for at least 6-8 hours. If you've started the car or driven it more recently, it tries to use some sort of calculation to tell you the oil level but it's often not correct. IMO, its best to only rely on it before first start of the day so long as some hours have passed because it can take awhile for the oil to come back to sump by gravity.

Other than that, welcome to the fold! Sounds like you're having a fantastic trip so far and I hope you and your wife make it home safely with plenty of smiles!

That's the right way to get used to your car. Well done!!!

Pics or it never happened.

And the water gauge is an idiot light. It will go to 175 and stay there, even if the OBD II indicates 235F. If it ever goes past 175, then worry.

Thanks for the advice on checking oil- Yes I only use the morning reading after it sits all night to gauge if it need a bit more.

After reading a bunch of '997 OIL Check" post after googling, on this forum and another, it seems best to also not try to top off, but have 1 bar not lit, so you dont add too much...

I feel like I am giving medicine to a small child and get nervous I have not calculated how much to pour from the bottle....lol

Just drive an enjoy - Check oil after getting home(1200Miles to go??) in the morning after the car sits overnight. Of course checking the level gauge which shouldn't move much.
In 1200 miles there shouldn't be much oil burn.

Have fun!

"Water gauge just sits at 175 no matter what."

Unfortunately, that is true. Until the motor overheats and goes to red immediately.
It's fairly well accepted that Porsche chose to buffer that gauge so that it sits at 175 even though water temps increase above it. It is not to be used as fact.

Congratulations!

As others mentioned, to get an accurate oil level measurement, take a measurement with a cold engine, before you start the engine and has been sitting on a flat surface for over 24hrs. I have mine set to when I turn the key to ACC mode, it does an oil measurement.

This is the correct oil level that our cars should be at.
