Default PDK Service Costs - Yikes!

2009 C2 PDK car with 30,000 miles. Time to do the PDK service.

Local dealership PDK service = $915.71 and they also recommend (which I don't disagree with) doing the clutch/differential service = $849.99.

Total $1765

I am thinking of buying a PIWIS and doing this myself at that price. Convince me one way or another.

thanks - Rick

That is actually not a bad deal. I paid $1800 about a year ago in Bellevue Wa. Just make sure the tech knows what they doing because a lot of people never get this done so dealers may not have much experience.

Depends how you want to do it but at most it can be $250 job or $800 job

If you measure how much comes out, just put the same amount in. No need for reset or PWIS or etc. Change the gearset oil while at it, then you're good for many more years.
Get 3l of gear oil usually PTX and 5l of FFL3 oil. Most of the time oil pan is not necessary, you can always buy it and if necessary replace it (some early 09 models had issues.)

"...make sure the tech knows what they doing" What a sad but true statement about the quality of some techs

What the heck is a "differential service" on a C2?

There are two PDK services that I am aware of on a Carrera 2:

1) PDK Clutch fluid change
2) PDK Gear oil change

That's it.
If your car has had neither one, it's due for both (based on time - 6 years / 60k miles, and 12 years 120k miles respectively.)

Is your local Porsche dealership Porsche of Beachwood? Did they provide the pricing for the services you've quoted?

No the dealership is not Beachwood - It is Byers Porsche in Columbus, Ohio. Here is the cut and paste of the quote from my email:

Selected Services

Repair Services:
Tell Us More
CUSTOMER STATES TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH SUPPLING OIL AND REAR DIFF.GEAR SET OIL. QUOTED 845.99 PLUS TAX

TRANSMISSION
CUSTOMER STATES TO PERFORM A PDK SERVICE. QUOTED 915.71 PLUS TAX

As Ironman88 said, there is the PDK clutch oil/pan service, and there is the PDK gear oil service - that’s it.

What you pasted from the email has the preliminary “customer states” preamble, and doesn’t quite align with the above.

I suggest asking them to quote the parts and labor costs (separately) for each of the two PDK service types. The reason to separate the labor costs is that it varies significantly, depending on which part of the country you’re in.

But as lexhair linked to, this isn’t one to mess about with. I’d leave it to the professionals.

Clearly that dealer does not understand the service(s) needed for the PDK. (At at minimum - the service advisor involved.) I would definitely steer clear of them.

Looks like Porsche of Beachwood is some distance from you. I've dealt with them (sales and service) and they seemed competent.

I agree with others - have the work done by a competent Porsche dealership. If there's an issue later on with the transmission, it may prove beneficial that the work was done at a Porsche dealership.

(PDK transmissions are usually not repaired - they are replaced. And the replacement cost is $$$$$)

Outrageous but pocket change compared to full replacement. With a 2009, obviously no CPO anymore but do you have any kind of extended warranty? I'm asking since I've had two PDK failures, both requiring full replacement and well documented on this forum. First one on a 2009 C4S and the second one on my GTS. First one came to $14,000 and the most recent one on my 2011 GTS just above $20,000 so they're not getting cheaper. Both failures were traced back as electronically related so there's really no way of preventive maintenance to avoid these kind of failures.

Can't imagine taking a PDK apart in the garage and fixing it. Even if you're good with your tools, the biggest obstacle may be to get the parts needed. Not even the dealerships are allowed to get inside the PDK's and therefore can't get any internal parts. Hence the full replacements on any PDK with internal issues. At least that's what my service advisor told me. Both my failures were covered by extended warranties so they've paid off nicely for me.

This is true but it's changing. The PDK sticky thread in this forum is very informative. TLDR it's usually one part (the position sensor) that fails and T-Design has created a retrofit for it and indy shops are employing that part with great results. It's a fraction of the cost of a full replacement and something that has lowered my blood pressure about owning a PDK car.

For what it’s worth I had a 12 year service (43k miles) last month including the PDK clutch and transmission oil, spark plugs, brake fluid, etc a full 12 year service as recommended by Porsche.

Here in the UK it’s was circa £1600 at 3 Porsche specialist and £2100 at an OPC. For peace of mind and a stamp I chose the OPC.

Porsche calls the gear oil differential fluid. So the gear oil is the rear differential. The use a lot of different names depending on whether looking at the parts diagram or the repair manual and the translation.
