Default Not Happy With Exhaust

I installed Fister mufflers on my 997.2 and the sound is decent. But I don’t ever hear any burbles or pops. In fact, I don’t hear the exhaust at all unless I’m around 3k rpm. I’m coming from a glorious V8. So I’m not sure further modification will improve the exhaust as much as I’d like. Here are my specific questions:

1) Should I ditch the fister mufflers and do a straight bypass? I’d reduce the weight of the car by like 80lbs too! But I’ve been told a muffler delete sounds “cheap” and almost japanese. I’ve also been told drone is horrible with a muffler delete.

2) Should I keep the fister mufflers and replace the center muffler with an xpipe? I’m leaning toward this option. But I’ve been hesitant because several of the audio sample don’t sound that much different imo. Fister volume is like 6/10 and with an xpipe it sounds like a 6.5/10. At least on youtube.

3) If I get an xpipe should I get milltek $600, billy boat $800, or sharkwerks $900?

But part of me wonders if the fister mufflers are good enough? Since I’m coming from a V8 I’m asking too much of the 9A1? Maybe I should be content

I started with a center bypass and it wasn't enough for me. I then installed the FVD-Brombacher Porsche-Tuning 997.2 Street-Sport Muffler.
https://www.fvd.net/us-en/BES9972900...rombacher.html

My last Panamera was a GTS with sport exhaust which sounded incredible (so I understand your reference point coming from a v8), but the FVD on my 911 sounds way better. A very pure but aggressive sound.

I posted some audio files here demonstrating the sound from inside the cabin - https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...l#post13228241

The sound from outside the car is spot on in the official FVD video here -

from their site:
FACTS:
- + 15 crank hp & + 13 crank torque
- 2 ½” (63.5 mm) diameter tubing (reduces thermal stress)
- Replaces OEM primary and secondary mufflers
- Reuses OEM headers and 600 cell cats (No CEL, retains OEM software)
- Weighs 20.94 lbs. (9.5 Kg)
- 33 lb. weight savings over factory system
- German V2A - X5CrNi18-10 - 1.4301 stainless steel for improved durability
- Uses the spring lock race system design to dampen vibration
- Intoxicating growl at idle, partial throttle and wide open throttle

It will never be a V8. I have the Fisters and the billy boat’s x pipe. I did the x pipe before the fisters and the x pipe was very subtle. At times I wish it were a little less loud like when I leave the neighborhood in the early morning. I may put the center muffler back on for a week just to try it. Below 3000 it sounds stock on my 997.2 even with the x-pipe.

I installed a center crossover on my 2012 C2S and liked it, later I added PSE and I love it. I came from a Corvette C6 and I know what you mean. I haven’t tried Fisters or Gundo so I can’t give you a comparison.

The problem with YouTube as a gauge is that most microphones aren't setup to deal with the volume of the car exhaust and it ends up saturated at both stock and after the center muffler delete. The camera auto adjusts levels on each recording, and both sound like the volume is on 10. I assure you the difference in volume after removing the center muffler is very noticeable. The tone changes both at idle and at higher RPM. The volume increases by several db though I have no meter I would trust to give accurate readings.

My specific observations on PSE + Sharkwerks.
I notice with PSE open at idle on my car is that each pulse in the exhaust is much more distinct. I hear this in videos posted by others as well.
At higher RPM under load its a really big difference in the tone and volume.

I don't think it matters which of the three you posted you choose. It's not an especially complex piece. I chose SW because there are many reports of fitment issues with the PSE for Billy Boat and SW seems to always fit without issues. I had no fitment issues. There is a difference to the sound with the X-pipe style made by Fabspeed and top gear. Both get the job done, but to me the crossover style of the SW family has a more gruff sound at low RPM which I prefer, and I think with your background you'd like them better too.

The boxer engine has a really distinct sound profile. Subarus are the only japanese cars that can sound similar, and people seem to only do exhaust mods on the turbo engines (and maybe a BRZ/FT86 on rare occasion), which because they're all 4 cylinders and have turbos on the exhaust path have a different sound. The sound is also influenced by the short exhaust path of the rear engine design. The engine displacement is much larger than most of the Japanese tuner cars and it just has a different sound. But it certainly doesn't sound like a cross-plane V-8 since it doesn't have the stacked pulses.

The rear engine also influences the volume inside the cabin. To me, this is one of the things I really like about the 997 as a touring car. It is relatively quiet inside, significantly quieter than a Cayman S. Open the sunroof while downshifting through a tunnel and you'll know the sound is there.

The 997.2 center muffler kills any burbling from the exhaust, but the 997.2 also doesn't have the same overrun programming in the ECU as the 991.1. It will not pop like the 991 does (all controlled by the ECU). But after the center muffler delete is done, you can give it burble with a slight bit of throttle input while coasting.

Sharkwerks + Fister (ceramic coated) = burbles, pops etc, zero drone and still the traditional flat 6 wail above 5.5k.

Worth every cent. Kept the originals as well but just for completeness. No intention of ever adding them back on...

I had center bypass and PSE on a GTS and it did not have pops and burbles. I am building an exhaust for my current 2010 and it will have a 2" gundo with valves plus a center delete and eventually 200 cell cats.

Fabspeed has videos of cars with no side mufflers and no side or center muffler so you can get an idea of what they sound like. Or go to my last post in this thread and you can hear what a cold start sounds like coming straight out of the cats, ie no mufflers at all.

If I were you I'd get 200 cell cats.

If you are looking for more pops and crackles headers and center muffler bypass is necessary.

I have had the soul performance muffler bypass pipes on my car and is now replaced with fisters. They were on the car for less than 500 miles. Let me know if you are interested. They were too loud IMO.

The stock 997.2 exhaust is so quiet that I can't even properly hear the blips when I rev match. I have to keep an eye on the tach to make sure I'm giving it enough of a blip. Gotta do something about that, LOL.

since you already have the fisters on, the logical next step is a center muffler delete.

I have a center muffler delete x-pipe and am happy with the volume but I think it sounds like crap on cold idle and at low RPMs while letting the clutch out. Sounds "slappy" and tinny, and when cold it sounds like a broken muffler baffle. I might need to get used to the flat 6 sound. Coming from an H4 Subaru which was very different.

People seem to swear by the Fisters though I wonder how much performance they are adding. Seems like it's just a bypass pipe that allows half the flow to bypass the mufflers. I can definitely see how it would make it sound awesome but doubt there is a performance gain there.

I have PSE, Fabspeed 200 headers, and merged crossover.
The only reliable burble I get is on a relaxed overrun and the slightest hint of open throttle.
I think a dedicated map that sends a little extra fuel through on overrun is the only solution.
