Default 997.2 Manual Transmission Rebuild?

I figured it was about time I sign-up and create a post of my own after reading so many helping forums. I have a 2009 manual 997.2 that is struggling with 1st gear lock out and grinding synchro into 2nd. From what I have seen online this might just be how these transmissions behave but it is my personal biggest complaint with my car. After doing a long search online, I was not able to find any information on repairing the manual transmission for the 997.2. Has anyone heard of this being done? Right now it seems like my only option would be to replace the box.

My current solution is to double clutch into 2nd and that reduces the grinding to about 5-10% of the time. Once the car is up to temp (20 minutes of driving or so) the grinding is reduced to about 10% of the time. Thanks,

What oil are you running in the trans? How old is it?

Hey 4Driver4,

I replaced the gear oil a few thousand miles ago with Mobil Delvac. There was a small improvement after I replaced the oil.

Check out gboxweb.com. They are located in Boulder, Co. They rebuilt the gear box in my sons "07 C2S that had a 2nd gear cracked synchro.

I'd be tempted to try switching to the Porsche stuff before doing anything more extreme.

I agree 4Driver4,

I will change the oil again next season to OEM and play with the shifter cables. Thanks for the input Lugs. I will check them out - good excuse for a ski trip too.

Okay before you do anything drastic you need to change out the fluid. Replace the fluid with Mobile PTX and not anything else. Suncoast Porsche is the only place I am aware of that sells it. That exact fluid has eliminated or helped so many people. Do a search on PTX. Your 997.2 will take 3 quarts and while you are at it put in a magnetic drain plug. The one for your engine oil is exactly the same one used in the transmission.

I would not wait until next season. Each grind occurrence is damaging your transmission

One more plug for changing out the Delvac fluid to the factory spec Mobilube PTX. Do not wait long, do it asap.

Another PTX cultist. It's Porsche approved and is usually only sold in 20 liter jugs. As doclouie commented Suncoast Porsche repackages them in 1 liter bottles.

+1 for Mobilube PTX from Suncoast. When I bought my '07 C2S back in March with 50k miles, it was real notchy going into second, especially when cold. There were a few times I was sitting at a light then went to put it into 1st and it wouldn't want to go. I changed out the gear oil with the Mobilube PTX and my shifting improved dramatically.

The manual transmissions in these cars are the seemingly one of the most reliable parts of the vehicle. You shouldn't have to replace or rebuild a manual tranny in these cars without some serious neglect or abuse.

+1 on PTX. I sometimes had a sticky first gear at stoplights and have a 4th gear grind on every first cold shift of the day. Solved after changing out to PTX.

PTX, pull the console and adjust the shifter cables. My low mileage car is notchy when cold, just have to be patient until the fluid moves around and warms up. They are pretty strong transmissions and not know to have issues, but if not patient when cold or abused, there may be some wear/damage.
