Default New Documentation...Desperate! Left Front Axle Slipped Out....??

( 2006 997 Carrera C4 TRIPTONIC...) Here is where I am....... See attached pictures. The entire left side axle pulled out (including the joint flange) from the differential when I lowered the wheel carrier hub to help in removing the strut. (See picture 1.) Picture 2

. shows a partial view inside the differentials including the ring gear and pinion shaft which appears to be out of alignment...or maybe not?? All of the write ups that I have tried to follow indicate unscrewing the 6 hexagon head bolts to remove the axle which I suppose would leave the joint flange attached. What happened and can I reinstall and continue reinstalling the strut ? Or what steps should I follow to move forward? Any and all advice is needed and appreciated!

Hi Billy, I did the same with my 997.1 4S when installing top strut mounts.
1. undo cv bolts, put flange in diff and with a block of wood tap flange and spline snug into diff. then reassemble.
Bit of a pain installing bolts in tight space.
2. leave axle complete, once again use block of wood to tap into diff. Steve.
Inside the differential looked the same on mine also.

Looks like the circ clip is missing off the end groove that prevents this

I am looking at the schematics to confirm your idea...I appreciate your keen observation and will post back shortly. Meanwhile, maybe someone else can confirm. Billy

If your axle pulled out without much force, then it was probably reinstalled without a circlip in the past. I did this on my previous C4 and others have noted the same mistake, that the axle only comes out with a lot of force - for example, stepping on the control arm to help the strut assembly clear the fender. To reinstall, just make sure that the circlip is installed as you see on the schematic, and make sure that the flange is as flush as it is on the other side. Mine took a little pop to seat appropriately, and I had no issues or leaks after that. Good luck.

I am SUPER grateful for your help! That seems very likely because it happened exactly as you described. Again, I appreciate your help beyond imagination. Billy in Montgomery.

Smile In Appreciation For Your Help

Thanks again, smadill, jeebus31 and docdrs for your "analyses". The circ clip was definitely missing and I located instructions on installing it back onto the half shaft flange and then back into the transmission. See screen shots . Also, included several screenshots of the removal and installation of other front suspension components taken from a comprehensive set of 997 2005-2008 Porsche Workshop Manuals, Supplements, and tons of other all inclusive technical information covering all systems of the 997. As appreciation for your responses to my post, I will set up a link to my Google Cloud which will enable you guys to download these Manuals. If interested,

Just PM me and I will send the link back. Thanks again! Billy in Aabama

You can't go past forums like Rennlist and Porsche forum Australia (where I am from) for information and help. Cheers Steve.
