Default Which Direction Should the Wheel Cap Crest Point

I started a long conversation at a Cars and Coffee a couple of weeks ago. I basically asked which direction the point part of the wheel cap crest should point. I had always heard that it should point toward a lug nut.

Hmmm. makes sense. Is that so that you can find valve stem faster?

All is well in 997-land when this topic gives us a break from
IMS RMS Bore Scoring, paint thickness, PDK explosions
and the like. Drive!

I think the idea about the crest pointing to the valve stem was for pit crews to have a quick visual aide. When I use locking lugs, the crest points towards the stem and the locking lug.
I do not have a close up but I just like little details like that. I don't think it really matters overall. IDK if you can see it in this pic. but I do it just because I like the motorsport reference. I also noticed that certain shops will just do this if they remove your caps, which I think shows attention to detail and care. Here in LA, both House Automotive and PRO Motorsports have done this with the crest and the locking lugs without my asking.

It's a concours thing. Points are deducted if the crest is not aligned to the valve stem.

I always point it at a lug, then use it as a reference point when I torque my lug nuts. I always start at the lug that the Crest points to.

If a shop took the time to align the crests a certain way, I would appreciate it. It's like the screws on an outlet or switch cover. I wouldn't give an electrician a hard time for not aligning the screw slots the same way, but if he did, I would automatically assume that he was careful and had a great attention to detail in other aspects of his work.

Always park your car with the crest perfectly level on all four wheels. That looks awful with them pointing in different directions.

OK, it's getting later here and this is creating an itch I've got to scratch. I've wired a bunch of houses and never thought about it. I just installed 47 boxes in our kitchen remodel. I've got another 142 boxes in other areas of the house and garage (yeah, I've mapped them all as I've pulled new wire from the entry box to the house and back to the garage and replaced the Zinsco distribution panels).

So ... Do the screw slots end up vertical (to shed dust) or horizontal?!?!

BTW ... As an aside three prong outlets get installed "upside down" in labs so if something falls between the plug and the outlet it will hit the earth prong rather than short hot to neutral. People look at you weirdly if you do this in a home

Sometimes the little things can matter. I'm looking at these outlets and am becoming annoyed with my sub standard work 8(

I don’t have a preference as long as they’re all the same. The ones in my shop are vertical.

^^^^ Thats some proper cable management. I work in telecom labs and from one side of the Atlantic to the other I never get to see cabling that looks like that.
