Default What do you keep your rpms at???

Guys,

I find that the 997 transmission and gearing are very well matched and permissive. I find that I like shifting the car at a bit over 3000 rpms but not sure when driving in the city, which is the right gear for the speed when following the city speed limit ???

Am I wrong to think that steady 3000rpms is about the right rpm cruising speed where the rpms are just right without either be over-revving or bogging the engine down???

What's your experience ???

I certainly like to keep the engine above 1000 and 1500rpms, it just feels like it's trying to hard to pull a high gear. I try to keep it no less than 2000rpm in the day to day. It seems to me that the engine is happy at 3000-4000rpm, circulating plenty of oil and coolant around at that engine speed, managing the heat.

I have just few rules:
I don't lug the engine - ever!
No higher rpm:s than 3.000 until engine oil is fully warmed up.

I agree that engine is happy around 3.000 rpm. Works fine to daily drive 2000-4000 rpm.

I usually also rev it out fully on a few gears every time I drive (provides that engine is warm) Partly because it's a pleasure to do it but also I think it keeps engine more free from problems. If cause also those occasional spirited drives where the rpm never stays below 3000-3500

These engines are built for high rpm:s. Low rpm is more damaging than high. As mentioned above: oil pressure is not that high when you lug the engine so there will be risk for poor lubrication.

Sounds like you have a healthy overall driving style.

Yes, 3000 RPM seems to be the sweet spot on the American roads (mostly in city and highways).

Never below 2,000 and 2,600-4,200 in normal driving with some runs up past 6k when it makes sense. You can hear the variocam plus change the exhaust note at around 3,800.

Under 4k until oil reaches 150+ as per Porsche manual. After that I enjoy the car the way it was meant to be driven. I don't abuse it but it does see a fair share of 6k+ pulls.

Once it's warmed up, I like keeping my Turbo around 3000. Not just for the more immediate power, but because I have an exhaust and it just makes the experience feel more exciting and racy. Even on the highway, I'll usually keep it in 5th instead of 6th unless I know I'm just going to be doing long distance at a constant speed - 6th becomes my "meh, whatever, this is just A-B" highway gear.

This and this^^^
You do need to get it up in revs from time to time. They were designed for it and that is also where the real fun factor is.

I had some jackass tell my wife that her GT4 "does not need to be warmed up. It is a GT car: these cars are fine to run hard cold". This was at a DE event!

Never mind this is NOT a GT motorsport engine, but a standard 9A1 with some tweaks, but even if it were, would any of us go hammer a cold engine? A GT3 warms up quickly due to the heat produced in the engine, but even that car needs a nice 5-10 minutes, depending on ambient temp.
