He had a PPI that checked out mechanically and that showed a respray on both the front and rear bumpers. He still bought the car and has no regrets.!
I think this is true especially in the LA market!

If possible to stretch to a 2009 base (or wait and save up the small difference required) I think that would be the way to go. Getting a base 911 and modding the car over time would be fun. The difference in performance between a 997.1 S and a 997.2 base is negligible. Being able to pick out the brake setup I want and modding for it versus having a 911 S that already has upgraded factory brakes.

If you're looking at spending $35k on a 997.1 S... its a very short distance into base 997.2 territory.

Sound thinking regarding performance. Unfortunately at the moment all the 2009 PDKs that are $40-45k+/- and have at least 90-100k+ miles on them. Lower mileage cars, at the same price range, are salvage or flood inflicted.
So, I'll have to wait and see what pops up.

buy this car and have a fun road trip getting back to Cali. As a street car, you won’t need the power, brakes or suspension upgrades of an S and you’ll have PDK and no IMS and lower bore scoring issues.

I was looking at that one pretty closely but I'm leaning away from it for aforementioned the high-mileage reasons above.

Whatever lower amount that you are going to resell it for you're getting up front at this point. If you're really looking for something now and in your price point and want to avoid the IMS / Bore scoring risk, then you should be making this decision 9/10 times.

Of course, you could just wait to see if 997.2's go down in price over the next few years but I think many would agree the curve for 997.2's are flattening out and really the mileage is what is bringing prices into your range.

If you're willing to accept the risk, get the 997.1.... me personally, I wasn't open to the risk and was either willing to pay up to get the 997.2 or just move on to a 981 Cayman in that price range.

For those still following this is the recent shortlist:

2005 C2S w/ 44k miles (2 owner car, loaded) $41.8k asking

2006 C2S w/ 55k miles (1 owner car) $35k asking

2006 C2S w/60k miles (4 owner car) $37k asking

2006 C2S w/ 76k miles (4 owner car) $37k asking

2009 C2 w/ 56k miles (3 owner car, always in AZ, missing some of the premium features of the others) $36k asking
This one is in the lead

2010 C4S w/ 105k miles (2 owner car, if I want ot go with a high mileage car) $42k asking

Yep, I think I'm netting out in your direction. I can always wait. My current car will run forever but it bores me to death. Leaning heavily toward this: 2009 C2 w/ 56k miles (3 owner car, always in AZ, missing some of the premium features of the others) $36k asking
They will tack on $1,700 of mandatory dealer b.s. (tint, care package whatever that means) to bring up their margin + a $400 dock fee. SO it'll be $38k in the end + title tax etc.

I'm told I told have to pay taxes twice on the car (AZ + CA) but that's them telling me that not a CA DVM employee. Researching now.

That is a great deal... even with the mandatory dealer b.s. If I didn't have my 997.2 already, I'd buy that... even though I want my Carrara White w/ Stone Grey interior, that is too good of a deal to pass up. Honestly.

If you want, I'm local and can try to see if I can drive by to take a look. For a PPI, I haven't used McIlvain Motors (http://www.mcilvainmotors.com/) before for PPI but the owner Scott is the Tech chair of the local PCA so I think you'll get a pretty good assessment.

Hey mujeriega, thanks again for the call today! It's all slowing putting my mind at ease about buying an out of state car.

I placed a refundable deposit (based on outcome of PPI). Driving to Scottsdale on Friday to check it out. Stay tuned.

If that Midnight blue car had Sport Chrono, I'd probably have a deposit on it already. You and I have similar taste in 997s!

I'm starting took look for a 997.2 base Carrera 2s myself! Is there a search engine you used to find these? I've been checking the craiglists and main search websites but I never come across good ones between 35-40 K

Yeah, that's the car he's got the deposit on and was going to get a PPI on. Waiting to hear how it went.

The -09 C2 with 56K miles for $36K would be an easy choice for me assuming a good PPI and no ugly histories. No IMS, updated interior and much more over the .1 contenders. Performance wise the difference between a base .2 and .1S is basically negligible.
