Default Which Brake Fluid? Porsche stuff is expensive!

2009 C2S 133K miles

OK, ad nauseam

Pelican, for my model, has:
- Porsche labeled stuff for $33.50 per liter
- ATE SL DOT 4 for $10.75 liter
- ATE Type 200 DOT 4 for $14.75
- Penntosin DOT4 for $13.00

My Manual does not denote any type or brand except "Original Porsche" only. BTW, capacities in my manual denote .45 liter.

Given I am a moron, I will probably use a few drops more than 1 liter therefore I should buy two liters. That means $67 vs $22 ???

Well, which is it? No tracking the car.... I change per the manual every two years.... I don;t care that my fluid can withstand nuclear attack or not harm alcoholic rodents on a bender.

Peace

I drained and refilled with the Ate 200 Dot 4 using the Power Bleeder. I bought 2 containers and used a bit of the second on my first drain and refill. I had some trouble picking up the color change between the old and new fluid in the clear tube but now I know what to look for and will only buy one liter next time. Oh, sorry, this is on a 2012 TTS with the PCCB system so the volume is probably different. If the book says 0.45l you should be fine with 1 liter.

Hi Bruce,

A quick check on eBay for ATE Typ 200 found 3 liters delivered for $40.00. I use it and it works just fine. In fact, I know the dealer will use it as well. It's probably better than the Porsche fluid which I believe is supplied by Pentosin. One liter is probably enough for most brake flushes unless you are clumsy like yours truly...

Best Wishes,
Phil

I use AMSOIL DOT 3&4 brake fluid. Dry/Wet boiling points are 520/368 degrees F. Comes in 12 oz bottles. Retail is $8.00 a bottle, $6.05 a bottle via Preferred Customer program. If I track car in future I might switch to the DOT 4 Racing fluid with boiling points 580/410. Cost of that is $16.05 and $10.85 respectively. Both are available in cases of 12 if you want to buy that way.

BTW, 12 ounces = .355 liter, so three 12 oz bottles would be roughly one liter.

I use this and their high temp if/when I tracked. I’ll dig up a spreadsheet we made a while back comparing the most common fluids.

I used ATE Typ200 when I replaced my front rotors/pads a couple of months ago (I bought 2 liters for my 997.1 base, but I think if you're careful 1 liter should do)
I was considering Motul RBF600, but then decided to just go with ATE since it was a popular suggestion in the forums.

Just got done recommending this in another thread. IMO this is the best value on the market in terms of $, dry boiling, and more importantly wet boiling:

I’m about due for a flush/change. I plan on using the ATE Type 200 Dot 4. I don’t track my car either. I figure since I change the fluid every two years and don’t track, the ATE is more than adequate.

I use are SL6. For some reason (and I don't recall why currently) thought it was better for ABS systems.

ATE 200 and don't look back Bruce. I use it with a Motive power bleeder on all 3 of zee germans in our garage, including one P car.

1 Liter is enough to do a car with a power bleeder, 2 just lets you drink an extra beer while waiting for fluid to get through and a bit more pumping.

So 2 then

This is what I use in both my cars, on the recommendation of a racing firm who also prep cars for the track.

Bruce,

When you consider the cost of the brake system in your car don’t skimp on the fluid. It’s relatively inexpensive in the grand scheme of things! Also, you merely replace the fluid about every 24 months—just use the Porsche stuff.

(For comparison, I have a pre-1980 Rolls-Royce and it takes a special formulation of Castrol’s which is 97.2% DOT 3 and the balance caster oil! Castrol RR363 runs about $45 a liter, and the system takes several liters!!)

Personally, I find the Porsche fluid to be excellent. When you have as fine a car as a Porsche 997, don’t skimp on the maintenance. It’s one of the most economical ‘super-cars’ ever produced. For what people are now spending on a second hand 997, which is still capable of over 180 mph, it’s a deal and a half!
