Exactly?

I do think the format works - sort of like a group ppi / wiki, in that if the seller wants top dollar, he must respond to all of the questions and disclose as much as possible. This is a form of ppi. If buyers get a hint of an issue, then all bets are off (usually). Either the value drops or it becomes a RNM (reserve not met). The current car we are playing with here may indeed suffer from this. If I were allowed, I'd drop my "bid" by a few grand based on the comment posted there. Also, a ppi does not always show everything either. In an ideal world, I put my own eyes on a car before buying. That said, I have bought multiple cars sight unseen, with eyes on by fellow rennlisters, or no eyes at all. Sometimes you get burned. It's only money

I see what you're saying but the cost of replacing an engine is about the same whether it's a $50K or a $100K 911. So for me, I wouldn't try to save $300 on a PPI because the BAT car had 100 pictures, a beautifully novel written about it by the seller and it only cost $50K. It could still have horrible DME readings and evidence of bore scoring, evidence of extensive body work and paint work, none of which needless to say would be included in the novel or most likely not visible no matter how many pictures.

I guess the thing I don't get about BAT is what seems to be the notion by many that BAT sellers are more honest about the condition of their cars than sellers elsewhere( including dealerships) and that a huge amount of pictures along with the extensive disclosure requirement is a good substitute for a PPI. Just for starters, how many 997 owners can state with any kind of honesty whether or not their car has bore scoring issues or not? Most would have no way of knowing. And how many with a manual can say they have no DME readings above 3?

Almost the same thing again. Some may have a hunch but many others honestly wouldn't know. I could go on and to each their own but I will continue to buy my cars the way I always have whether the ad has 5 pictures or 100. And I'll gladly pay the $300 or $500 for a first rate PPI any day no matter where the car is advertised and no matter how perfect it is according to the seller.

Yes, buying a car at auction poses some increased risk. This is even more true with Mecum, Gooding, Barrett-Jackson, etc. Typically no PPI's, no test drives, and an unscrupulous seller can fairly easily hide flaws. I have bought two cars at Mecum auctions and was high bidder (but no transaction) on one BAT car. The mecum cars where both decent purchases, but both did have some hidden issues that a PPI might have uncovered. Or might not have as PPI thoroughness and quality varies as widely as the cars themselves.

But auctions still have appeal and value, not the least of which is exposure to cars for sale that you otherwise would likely not even know about. And for BAT, lots of high quality pictures ARE effective at figuring out if it is a car you are interested in, along with the description, documents, and often the comments. And if you do consider selling your car on BAT, lots of very high quality photos are key.... Why continue arguing the point?

There are alot of talkers on BAT, but what makes you think many of the real bidders and buyers of 50-200k+ Porsches on BAT aren't getting PPIs? Most post DME data. The higher end ones post paint meter readings so people believe the Carfax reports. A serious bidder getting a PPI won't tell other bidders about it to save them money. And many bidders probably don't know Porsches are so problematic they need bore scopes to make sure they won't be on the hook for a new engine that somehow costs what an entire new Camry costs. Just kidding there. Sort of.

At the rate that it's going looks like I have a good chance! The real action usually doesn't happen until the last 2 minute anyways.

I'm betting on RNM...Where it gets to, is still up for grabs.

I think I was high now. Should've gone lower.
