So, not sure if you guys have followed Nick Murray on YouTube, who does a lot of cool Porsche and car videos and basically came to fame highlighting the numerous issues with his 991.1 which finally was bought back by Porsche as a lemon! Now, unlucky enough, his 991.2 is developing similar issues, almost all electrical, and has been in the Porsche dealership for over 2months, with weird issues preventing the car from even starting!!!

This to me this is further proof, 997 is pretty much the LAST mostly mechanical 911, and all new generations moving forward would have more and more of these electrical issues which could be impossible fix outside of dealers in 20yrs or so. Obviously we still have a ton of electronics in our cars, but they're more primitive and easy to diagnose than anything in 991/992 and beyond.

Thoughts?

PS. IMS issues aside ofcourse, don't bring up the same old IMS, IMS, IMS nonsense... we all know!

I follow him too. hard to believe lightning strikes twice. Running through my head is the dash cam and radar detector installs he did and how they're prob cut into wiring harness for power. Has any of that started to short behind the dash?

I'm not sure about the 997 as "mostly mechanical" this sounds like some bogus story an owner tells themselves to feel better.


a 997 still has pretty much every critical system as being computer controlled. Is it a bit more analog feeling than a 991.2.. surely. But to say its mostly mechanical does a disservice to some previous generation that weren't run largely by computers (which a 997 is, in fact)

Fuel injection
Stability management
Headlights (aren't they all auto leveling? maybe that's just 997.2)

Probably have to go back to the '79, '80, '81 era to get a truly mechanical 911 or other Porsche for that matter. After that, they replaced the K-Jet and L-Jet Mechanical Fuel injection with Electronic Fuel Injection and there's the first computer where things aren't fixed mechanically.

For me though, the 997 is the perfect balance of classic 911 and modern 911.

exactly right. Seems like 911 owners constantly try to reinforce their purchase with this "LAST OF" crap.

the 991.2 guys are out there pushing the, 991.2 is the last of the real 911s, the last of the real sports cars, the last of the analog experience, blah blah blah.

Yeah, the 992 Derangement Syndrome in that forum is pretty funny to watch. The way they talk, you'd think the 991 is a time capsule of raw analog purity from the 80s that only true driving enthusiasts can appreciate.

As someone who does as much of his own wrenching as possible, I agree. In fact, mention "DME" to a 964 guy and watch him break out in hives Porsches have been becoming increasingly electronic since the 80s. And my 997.1 was down most of a year due to the engine replaced (bore scoring). I keep the car because the new engine is reengineered to a standard of durability at least equal to the 9A1, and it would cost me anywhere from double to quadruple the resale value of mine to move into a newer model.
I think the 997 (especially the .1) strikes a nice balance between iconic looks and modern safety and convenience features, but I don't feel like it's "the last of" anything...other than perhaps the last Porsche I will own, and that's mainly a consideration of my age and money decisions.
