Manual tranny question.
Guys, while trying to convince my wife that we would do just fine with a 6spd manual tranny, mostly cause the choice of cars is much greater, she asked me a question to which I don't have an answer.....
Should you have to stop mid-way up a long steep underground garage exit ramp. is there an anti-rollback device that keeps you from having to fight with the down pull ??? or are these transmissions like the old school type where one could very well back in the car behind them, or stall trying to move ahead a few feet at a time while trying to keep up with the exiting cars.
Reason for asking is that our work garage has a long steep exit ramp and at 4pm, there's always a line-up. So chances are pretty good that one gets stuck in a lineup of 4-6 cars trying to exit off the ramp.
Thanks.

I like the hill assist on my 997.2. As you let off the clutch and apply the gas, the brakes hold for 2-3 seconds giving you enough time to increase revs and then they release.
I frequent a parking garage where the exit is a steep ramp (where I have to stop on it to pay) and I never worry about how close a car is behind me anymore.

As others have replied, the 997.1 does not have a "hill assist", unless you consider the "emergency brake method", which I find very useful when getting out of my work garage which also contains a steep exit ramp. Done correctly, it will not grind the clutch, the operative word being "correctly".

Actually, it is extremely steep..... steep enough to only see the roof top of the car in front of you and to pin you against the backseat....

I like this feature on my 997.2. I believe it engages at a 5% slope. Just be aware manual 997.2’s are harder to come by than 997.1. You will need to move fast when you find one.

I have never noticed hill-start assist on my 2009 997.2 C2S.
It is painfully obvious on my Jetta - to the point I think it's worse than a regular hill start - but can't say it's ever intervened, to my knowledge, on the Porsche.

As long as the emergency brake is cable operated rather than electric. An electrically operated e-brake will automatically release after you have really ground into the clutch but a cable operated e-brake is easier to modulate.

I hate that hill assist... hate it. My clutch to gas response is way faster than that... I hate it. It was the first question I asked of the dealership... how to disable it. Can't.
