Default Stumped on CV boot replacement

Hopefully someone here has done this. Replacing front CV boots on my drivers side C4. In order for me to get the CV joint off of the shaft, I need to remove this top cup correct? By doing so it should reveal the spring clip holding it all together. So the question of the day...how do I remove this outer cup? I am afraid to beat on it because it seems like it could deflect pretty easy. I also do not want to deform the edges to much do it? Thanks in advance.

You need to remove the boot and clamps first. Then use a dead blow hammer or something like that to give it a good rap lower down where the boot is attached to the joint housing.

FWIW, I did this same fix when I purchased my car in 2015. Spent a BUNCH of money on it at the dealership. Within three years my front CVs were totally shot. Spent a bunch of money/sweat just doing it myself. I’d consider replacing them altogether and not going back in a second time in the future. If your mileage is up there just replace them if you can.

Because I am in Cleveland (18" of snow and sub zero temps) so I have all the time in the world to do this. I am having fun doing it. I do have a side of me thinking I should have just purchased a whole new assembly. The total job will cost me about $180 in parts and a new shaft assembly is about $600. And...think of the education I am getting BUT, ALEV8...I see your point.

use a pin (i.e. blunt) punch. Just tap, rotate, tap, rotate, etc. its pretty easy to reform the lip if you bend it a bit, so give it a few good whacks and it will start moving.

Messy job, but easy and saves a lot of money.
