Default 997.2 / CS2 / 6MT / No Sunroof - am I looking for a unicorn?

Recently I have been looking for a 997.2 Carrera S, rear wheel drive, manual transmission car, with no sunroof.

I am finding that a lot of ads don't mention if the car has a sunroof or not, but when I start looking at photos, I frequently find the awful things.

So, I am starting to think that Porsche must have made sunroofs part of the standard equipment, and any cars without a sunroof may have been a special order. If this is impossible to find, maybe I need to start looking for a Sport Classic with the double bubble roof, which seems to be a different kind of unicorn. What about the GTS version – did any of those come without a sunroof?

Please don’t respond with “just keep the sunroof closed”. I have had my share of BMW’s with sunroof leaks, and from the research I have done on these forums, it looks like the Porsche sunroof design is quite similar to the BMW design, where water is allowed to flow into the “sealed” area and internal gutters channel the water to drain tubes running down the A and C pillars. When these tubes get clogged, it’s bad news with water on the carpets and elsewhere.

I’m really not an open air car hater: I also have a Boxster and a formula race car. I just do not want the potential sunroof problems.

Thanks for any advice,

If it’s the no sunroof option that’s keeping you from finding the right car you can always buy a roof from Porsche without the sunroof cutout. It was around $400 last time I checked. The roof is just glued on, a competent body shop can replace it.

Just keep the sunroof closed.

I've had my 997 for almost 3 years, parked outside and no sunroof leaks. I've had about 20 other BMWs and none of their sunroofs leaked either.

Seems like you are shooting yourself in the foot missing out on a lot of excellent cars in favor of something that very likely *will not* happen

PAG did not produce a single no sunroof Carrera, Carrera S or GTS 997.x, at least for the US market.

Yup. only option for 997s.

Or just get the sunroof car and have the water drains cleaned every couple years. Dealers do this for an hour's labor. Cheaper than replacing the entire roof.

Assuming you are in the US, what you are looking for does not exist. All 997.x had a sunroof other than the 997.2 GT3 which could be ordered without.

I would prefer the head room of a slick top myself. The 991 could be had without a sunroof.

I never hear of sunroof problems. Just keep all the drains clean as part of regular maintenance.

Removing the sunroof will cost approx 5k including parts and labor. The headliner without sunroof (in leatherette) costs $1700 USD and the roof panel is around $500 USD.

This is exactly what I meant. 25lbs saved from the roof of the car!! You don't need oem headliner for $2k, any good interior guy can make a custom one.

I don't have a sunroof, but my car's no unicorn (9972 C4S). I just didn't want all the additional weight in exactly the wrong place.
