Are 987 and 997 center consoles compatible?

not sure about that. if your 997 console's paint is chewed up its a pretty easy DIY to respray it. ive done a writeup on it. the other option is to buy a new one. they go for around $650 from Sonnen.

Yes they are. Only difference is the 997 has the rear cubby which is removeable. Just need to swap yours to the new one. Philips or torx 22 if I recall.
Most of the extras in the center console: aux input, cigarette lighter, etc are sealable between them all.
Make sure to disconnect the battery. If you put the key in when the console is out you will get an airbag sensor light due to the light in the center console. It’s really easy to do, just need the right torx bits.

As others have said. Same. I had a heck of a time getting the cig lighter power thingy out to repaint. Can't remember exactly the issue or how I overcame it but it was a pain.
Removing shifter requires a twist to unlock and leverage. It can be done without removing but much easier to remove. I clamped some locking pliers on be the metal shaft and used some kind of bent tool to leverage off without smacking myself in the face.

997 coupes have the rear cubby - 997 cabs do not. Otherwise the same.
