Default TECH EXPERTS:

I need help from the Technical Experts here, as I cant find the answer online...

Do you know if the 997.1 3.8 engine utilizes dumb coils or smart coils?

Smart coils have the ignition transistor inside the coil.

Dumb coils have the ignition transistor inside the ECU or an external ignition module.
  • Dumb coils usually have two terminals: Coil plus, which connects to 12v, and coil minus, which connects to the ignition transistor.
  • Dumb coils may have a third wire that is used as a shield.
  • Smart coils usually have a four terminal connector: 12v, ECU ground, system ground, and dwell/spark signal.
  • Smart coils may have only three wires: 12v, ground, and dwell/spark signal.

Thanks for the link, kisik!

I'm still looking for definitive evidence, one way or another

Or if anyone has a wiring diagram for them, that would be great!
