"...not sportscars! Why does everyone call them sports cars?"
2009 C2S 130K miles
Quiz: who said this? "They are GT cars!"
Hint: Tiff Needell
I my opinion, to be a sports car, you must be sub-3000 LB at a minimum...... My 2000 Boxster S was more of a sports car than my 2009 C2S.... Anywho... check the vid below.

I don't disagree. Many of the North American auto manufacturers (think Ford) use Sport to indicate a mid-range trim level. In the same train of thought as Bruce, I would say a base-Carrera is more of a sports car than a Turbo (S). Obviously the GT cars are not GT cars, but are rather GT cars (they need to better differentiate GT vs GT).
That being said, when compared to a Taurus or Accord, my 997.2 C2S is definitely a sports car.
Perhaps it's not an absolute scale? Is a 1980 911 SC more of a sports car than today's Carrera's? Based on your weight criteria, yes, despite them being, in essence, the same model.

The term sports car is one of those things that has the goal posts keep moving as time marches on. But changing what a sports car is thought of as also changes what the experience is. If a 3,800lb lard *** (GTR for example) is now considered a sports car.. the feeling of lightness in a miata (a real sports car) or other actual sports car is lost from what makes a sports car a sports car. Then we are defining not only a different kind of vehicle but a different experience from that when we discuss 'sports car feel'
A modern 911 at 2800lbs or so would get me buying a new 911 in a heartbeat.

Tough to find true high performance cars below that 3,000 lb. limit. Note that I left out out "sports" before I printed cars
