$60K: Late 997.2 C4S or Early 991.1 C2?
 

Hi all. Sorry for another thread like this, but we've came to a cross road and we're hoping fellow members can share some opinions.

For $60K (before tax/title and other stuff), would a 2011/12 997.2 C4S with all the bells and whistles a better buy, comparing to 2012/13 991.1 C2 plain Jane, no PSE/SC/PASM?

Other than the options/years, let's assume both cars are pretty similar in other aspects: black/black coupe with PDK; approximately 2 years left on Fidelity Platinum Warranty that can be transferred; 40K miles; all services are up-to-date; clean CarFax record.

I've driven both variants and liked the ride of both. It will be our daily commuter (wife and I will take turn driving it, approximately 40 miles a day). The game plan is keep it for at least 3-5 years.

For those who has seen keeping the tab on the market these past few years, do you feel these two cars will still be valued the same 3-5 years down the road? or one will be significant lower than the other?

Seems to be more and more evidence appearing here and elsewhere that the 991 is not holding its value as well as the 997. Here's an another current thread on the same issue. For a fun commuter you may like the 991. It is a much more comfortable car. For a weekend/occasion car, the 997.2 > 991.1. As for value retention, I see the 997.2 outpacing the 991.1 but for your purposes I see that being lesser of an issue.

The 997.2 will be worth more in the future than the base 991.1.

You don't say where you're located either, but the 997s AWD vs the 991s RWD may be a factor for a daily use car also.

Personally, I don't like the size, roundness, and rear cut lines of the 991 as well as the 997.

since you and wife will be driving for daily commute and you need pdk and you like the ride go for 991 (even though it may lose more value). I am learning that this is not a numbers game. More about emotions and how YOU and missus feel when driving either car. If a 997 wide body pulls up in front of you would you wish you had bought that one just for that killer wide body and compact glove like fitting cockpit ? 991 maybe lighter but 997 provides some perceived toss ability , nimbleness due to its size and swagger rights of driving a classic like 911 closer to it's roots/heritage.

I was in the same boat last summer and ended up with a manual 09 997.2 Guards Red C2S I found with only 7500 miles. Hard to compare them since they're two completely different cars. 991 will be a much more refined, smoother, quieter (rattles), and much more modern feeling car. At the same time, if you want a more raw, analog feeling sports car and don't mind the harsher chassis, a little more noise and some rattles that will in time come with all 997s then go for it. I believe that a late 997.2 C2S will for sure hold its value, or at least lose less of its value then a base 991.

I got the use of a base model 991 while my 997.2S was getting some work done. The 991 is a more roomy and comfortable inside and rides nicer. The complaints about size are nonsense, it's 2 inches longer than the 997! The most noticeable thing for me is the engine is anemic. Very disappointing!

Thanks everyone for the feedbacks!! The wife and I discussed it last night and we've decided to move forward with the 997.2. As mentioned in the previous replies, we like the look and feel of the 997.2 better after comparing both. For trips that require comfortable ride and cargo capacity, we have a 958.1 for that.

Hopefully we can carve some time this week to give it one last look before bringing it home!!
