997.2 3.8 Engine Failure

Jake,
In one of the videos you described the ideal oil measurement is taken after a decent car rest period- as in the next morning, to be most accurate. And that once car has been run it tends to be a misleading oil reading [not verbatim]
Question is on 997.2 I cannot get a reading until oil temp is warm. Whats an ideal way to gather accurate reading then please?

LOL, no.
Subaru has EJ (EJ25x for example) series engines that are equally troublesome if not far moreso. Subaru owners have engine failures like Porsche owners. And they suffer the cost of rebuilds like Porsche owners too. Also flat engines! Coincidence? Dunno.

I may have missed it so apologies if this was already discussed but how was this engine as far as carbon build up on intake ports and valves?

Bronz, meant to ask.... Between your previous oil change where you found nothing in the filter, to the time the noise started and you found metal and plastic shaving in that next oil change, have you done anything that could explain that sudden change of state after years of reliability.
I mean: have you tracked it ??? has it overheated in heavy traffic ??? had you started to drive it in the cold weather ?? you know, anything that would explain the scoring.
Hopefully you are presently having a blast.

Bronz and Jake,
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing this journey. You two were polite and professional.
Bronz, I hope that should I ever face an engine decision such as yours that I handle it as well as you have appeared to, and I hope that all members consider it too.
See ya on the streets!!!

Flew in to Atlanta on Friday to visit Flat 6 Innovations. Very very impressive place, attention to detail, organization and cleanliness is something to be desired by a lot of other shops i have seen. I didnt want to be too intrusive taking bunch of pictures there but heres a few from one of the buildings. Jud took almost two hours to show me around and explain everything in detail. Unfortunately i missed Jake by few hours due to my Turo rental timing. We rented a pair of 2014 and 2015 Porsche Boxster S for 4 days and took it on the trip from Atlanta to visit Flat 6, then Helen GA, then Cherohala skyway in Tennessee, Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina, then visited Asheville NC and back to Atlanta to come back home last night. Total 950 miles of driving in an absolutely amazing vehicle Porsche Boxster S. I have fallen in love with the car and i totally understand now what an amazing machine is Boxster S. It handles like an absolute dream on the twisties and Tail of the dragon was the best driving experience i have ever had!!! Heres a few photos from the trip.

Bronz... oh man, sorry I missed this post a few months ago. What an amazing experience! Bucket list stuff right there on Tail of the Dragon. Also so great to see Jake's Lair! The OCD runs hot over there and that is great to know when leaving your "precious" in the hands of FSI ! Great to see your reaction and excitement for the younger siblings in the Porsche Family too. There is a lot to love about the variety in the Porsche family of cars. Thanks for sharing

What a spectacular read!
Question - Many posts back some folks were concerned about fuel additive and possible connection with the bore scoring...
Let me ask you all about this stuff...Marvel Mystery Oil. I know...here we go! It sounds terrible but its really an old school additive that I used in my older classic cars years ago, with terrific results.
I realize we're talking about the 9A1 here ( I have a 991.1 - 3.4 NA ) I would NOT recommend using it in the motor oil in this application obviously but it's also used in the gas as "An upper cylinder lubricant" .
And its a fuel system cleaner too. Anyone have any experience using this on a water cooled Porsche?

That's an interesting link "FINED" because the first time I glanced at an engine block in a local reconditioning shop I thought it was a Porsche and naturally was interested in what they were doing to it. On further inspection it looked likes some new 4 cylinder M96 3.4 engine but it was a Subaru.
As an engine designer myself in a former life - I would have guessed the same guy designed both - so many features identical including the open deck construction. Don't know if the block was Lokasil or Alusil - but assume the former (due to the open deck?)
Wonder if the designer relocated from Subaru to Toyota or Nissan (one of whom I believe helped Porsche with the original engine design?) or was it Subaru all along or did they copy Porsche?
Either way interesting how similar the blocks and the resulting problems seem to be and worthy of deeper investigation and connecting with Subaru remanufacturing specialists to find out if there are any more links (sorry I don't have the time) a project for someone?
