Thanks. And of course i broke the end of one of the slats. I hope superglue will fix that as I don't want to buy a whole unit just for that.

I've been thinking and would it be less of a pain to just remove the whole unit, detach the fascia in order to install the metal clip from behind?
The black portion of the unit can be bought separately so I guess it's easy to remove the front.
Makes sense?

I’ve never tried it with everything intact so I’ve always just attached the metal from behind after in reinstalled the slats and then buttoned everything back up. The whole exercise is a bit of a pain.
worst case if you break the tabs that connect the black stuff to the silver surround there’s always glue.

Finally was able to put the slats back without having to dismantle the whole unit but needed an extra pain of hands to hold the metal bracket up and prevent the slats from moving.
No idea how you guys were able to do it by yourself. By far the least fun I had to work on my car and I hope I never have to do that again.

- Inserted the first top slat with the metal clip attached to it
- inserted the next slat and attached it to the clip
- Got someone to use a 90 deg hook to hold the metal clip upwards so it wouldn't get loose and to hold down the attached slats so they wouldn't rotate
- Inserted the remaining slats making sure they aligned with the metal clip
- For the last slat, I used a flat screwdriver to pry the clip so the slat could attach to it
