oil change differences

So last oil change I put in 8 quarts and was low. Had to add a 9th
Yesterday added 8 quarts was over full

Both with timed 20 min drain interval

So much for the state-of-the-art German over-engineerng syndrome. Just give us our dipstick back.

Yup, same for me.... I just measure what I take out and put the same or a bit less in. Seems to take a few readings to "stabilize: whatever that is.

Peace

9 quarts in what engine?

Petza914 09-20-2018 08:21 AM

I understand the 20 minute interval was the same, but that's not really long enough - needs an hour. Are you draining warm or cold?

This time let the car idle a few minutes. Last time no idea. Could have been up to temp or maybe just let idle or somewhere in between

Interesting fact. I just got another 997.2 repair manual. This one has 14,000 pages. It describes how to do an oil change but does not give a drain interval.

And it says the oil capacity of the engine in 10L

So at best we are only removing 75-80%

Where did you get that repair manual?? I was going to get the pdf from eBay but it’s no longer available.

On my 997.2 I fill to 7.5 quarts after draining warm for at least 1 hour, and then check it to see where its at. I usually only need to add a couple of ounces to show 1 bar off the top.

workhurts 09-20-2018 02:34 PM

7.5qts every time. Not sure how you get 9 qts back in.

Wayne Smith 09-20-2018 11:02 PM

7.5 out, 7.5 back in. 997.2 with 16 oil changes that I've done over the last four years and 82K mikes.

Measure oil level before draining. Measure the drained amount. Figure what you want to add. Better to be a bar (or two) low than too high.

Never burned a drop of oil? I'm at a quarts every 3,000 or so miles

workhurts 09-20-2018 11:42 PM

Any chance you miscounted or miscalculated the 1st oil change? Especially at a 20 min drain, I just don't see anything over 8 remotely possible.

Acquired stewardship at 35K miles. 117K four years later. 2010 C4S PDK.

In equals out within measuring capability. I use old empty 5 quart jugs to measure oil out (and recycle).

Drive times are enough to burn off moisture.

So practically speaking, never burned a drop.

The 9A1 varies, but others on this Forum have had similar experience.

dgjks6 09-21-2018 02:34 AM

Off topic but since its my thread I'm going there. 20K+ miles per year - what tires do you run? Do you do 2 sets of rears and 1 set of fronts every 20K? I'm asking because I do similar mileage and switched to all season tires on my 996 because I was getting sick of spending that much on tires and kept will all seasons from my 997.

Wow, these cars can hold 17 quarts of oil? I'm pretty positive that's overfilled. :D
