Default Which type of battery to use for 997.2?

I have searched the forum to get an answer but I couldn't. I bought my Porsche 997.2 two years ago and it had a NAPA battery that was changed by previous owner.

Battery is dead and I am looking for a replacement. The only information I get by searching is it is H7 model but what I don't know is which type? Some reported they got the Lead Acid and others got the AGM.

Which type was the OEM version since I never seen the OEM battery? Was it AGM or Lead Acid for Porsche 997.2 C2 ?

Thanks

If you have a vent tube, it's lead acid.

No vent tube, it's AGM.

You can by both at places like Pep Boys, Battery Plus and many other retailers.

I just had to replace mine (997.2) and the dealer told me they came with lead acid batteries until the 991.

Thanks for confirmation. I will go ahead with Lead Acid type then.

Any of the AGM H7 size from Pep Boys (Bosch), Interstate, etc. are great replacement options....and they do have outlets for the vent tube..

I haven't bought a lead acid battery in 10 years and wouldn't ever again. The sealed AGMs are so much better - no water level to maintain, no corrosion from a vent tube that comes loose, etc. I use Optima Red Tops in all my cars - the 34R is the one for the 997. The one in my 914 has been in there longer than 10 years and I've gotten over 5 years from all the other ones. The cars (except the truck) do stay on Battery Tenders when not being driven though, which probably helps with the long life.

My question was what is the OEM battery type. If it is lead acid then why do I get AGM. I would like to stick to what OEM is. It doesn't matter if AGM is better or not.

Your choice, of course, but unless you're entering the car in a Concourse competition where everything has to remain as it was when it left the showroom floor, there are much better battery options out there. Manufacturers have to balance vehicle cost vs benefit and profit. A lead acid battery is one area where they can keep costs down to increase their profits, which is the only reason they're used - you do know Porsche is the most profitable mass auto manufacturer out there, right?

If your IMS bearing failed, would you install the exact same bearing again, not that a simple battery replacement is like a component that could take out your entire engine, but my point is what was used before and is stock, isn't always all that great.

I am pretty sure the OEM battery for the 997.2 was a lead-acid type battery. My 2012 C2S had an Interstate H7 installed when I bought it last year.

I think the point Petza914 was making is there are better battery options available for our cars. The AGM battery is a "better mousetrap". But, there is nothing wrong with staying with lead-acid batteries if that is your desire.

I've used all types of battery chemistries in my line of work - NiCAD, NiMH, Lithiom Ion, and yes, Lead Acid. All of them have their pros and cons, but overall, lead acid is the most stable, value performer. But hell, aren't they heavy!

Anyone using an Odyssey battery? Life expectancy?

I occasionally ask this question..... I usually use Autozone Duralast Golds for my cars... the Odyssey is about $60--$70 more than the Duralast. My objective is only one: long life.... the Duralast in my Porsche appears to be getting weak... something it should not do.... However, I have not been driving the car much in the last two years due to a career issue..... so I put it on a CTEK maintainer on the weekends.... I think the short drives I am doing is wearing out the battery fast.

Anywho...... what is the longest life battery? Tough to get an answer on this one.

See my older thread on the Odyssey question.... https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...e-use-one.html

Odd, as I get older, I care less about getting a "good deal", I really want quality stuff that won't break. That is why I will only buy Michelin tires.... I don't care about the prices anymore (accept for repair work... be a man... DIY!)

Peace

At least one dealer is promoting and selling a Porsche AGM as a replacement for the 997.2

Was not familiar with this option. Main question I have is what all the additional cables are all about. On the OEM lead acid battery there's a positive and a negative terminal and that's it (besides the drain line). A lot more going on in your picture. What are all those additional cables for and what looks like an additional terminal?

Quick Reply: Which type of battery to use for 997.2?
