Weird Question: 997.2 C4S or...GT4?
OK, so I have the opportunity to own a low-mile, 997.2 C4S manual for around $60,000. I could upgrade the suspension with Ohlins and Elephant parts, and make a damn fine handling car. All-in, I am looking at about $67,000. I would also upgrade the cosmetics, so figure $70k when I am all done. I like the idea of a ducktail and a more aggressive bumper spoiler.
Or....I look at a GT4. My wife and I really want that glorious 6MT box. GT4 models are falling into the mid 80's.
Do we need rear seats? No, but they are useful, as we have little ones.
With suspension upgrades, which would you choose? Both are minimal depreciation cars. Both will be for aggressive street and perhaps the occasional DE event. Driving to work 2x a week and driving on weekends.
Driving experience?
Cosmetics?
Wow factor?

to me, this wouldn't even be a question. I would go for the GT4 over all water cooled 911s but the GT2s and GT33s. There are a bunch of GT4s at my work and they have a very sexy presence. This is just me though. I haven't driven one, or drive in one.
For me, top 5 would be:
1. 997.2 GT3 (RS would be nice but in reality...)
2. Any other GT3
4. GT2 (RS would be nice but...yeah right)
5. GT4
then, right after that wold be 911 GTS or 911T models.

im with him. Depends on what you want but the gt4 is a true razor sharp sports car. The c4s is a great all arounder.

I prefer 911 handling over Cayman handling. I have a Cayman S and 997 GTS, so not biased against Cayman. Just prefer the rear engine handling. first gen GT4 is going to continue to fall in price a little I think and right now the market is flooded with them for sale so it doesn't seem there is a shortage, you should be able to get one for the same or a better price in a year or two from now if you wanted to try it out later.

Why a 4S when comparing to a GT4. Get a 2S or a GTS for the real rear engine, RWD experience. If you want the wider rear, get the GTS. You'll be able to sell it in a couple years for what you buy it for today.

Wouldn't rule it out. Have a buddy of mine willing to pay me within $5K of what I paid for my GTS more than 3 years and 32,000 miles ago. In fairness though, the GT2 bucket seats and the Forgeline wheels doesn't make my car a perfect sales comp. To some who lust for those options, it will add value (quiet a bit) and to others, like stock fanatics it will make it worth less.

A bit further down the price scale, I chose my 997.2 C2 manual over a newer, lower mileage 981 Cayman S manual. For me the decider was the back seats. I have little kids too, and the opportunity to share the occasional drive with them was important to me. Today, when I hear the kids scream “faster” from the backseats I feel like I made the right choice.
In your shoes I’d probably find it hard to pass up the GT4. However, as you said these are both effectively no depreciation cars right now. Easy enough to swap in a couple years with minimal financial loss if you want to eventual try both.
