Default subtle transmission grind

Hello all, I have a 2006 4S Cab manual transmission with 66k miles (new transmission and flywheel 19k miles ago). I've recently noticed that at highway speeds there is a slight, as in maybe a .25 second, grind when shifting into 5th and 6th gear. I've also noticed that about 50% of the time, it only does it the first time I shift into 5th and 6th gear. And after I've driven the car for several miles, it doesn't do it at all. No issues with any other gears.

Anybody else experienced anything like this? Is this worth having checked out? Or just keep driving it until the problem is worse? Thoughts?

This is just my weekend toy, not daily driver.

Is it a proper grind, or does it kind of notchily drag into gear? My car shifts like crap until it gets warm. Part of it is, when I go from 1st into 2nd, 3rd into 4th, or 5th into 6th, it feels a bit notchy and like it has some drag (tension) before it goes into the gear. If I were to let the clutch out too early in this scenario, it would grind I assume. Sometimes, it is a little more annoyingly like this and sometimes less annoyingly like this but every time, once the oil is up to temp (just as a marker), it shifts like butter and I have no complaints.

If it is a proper grind, I would take the car in. If it is just slow to shift when cold and a bit notchy, I would complain all the same to my mechanic but also I wouldn't stress on it since there seems to be many threads about 911 shifting like crap cold if you search them out.

It's definitely a very brief grind.

Change the trans fluid. Cheapest, easiest step.

What happened to the trans and flywheel 19k miles ago that necessitated a replacement? Make sure you're not having any leaks - check the diff seals.

If I’m not careful and take my time, same thing happens to my car, albeit at lower gears like 2nd or 3rd.

Are you patient when colder or do you shift like you would a regular car? Even the old 915 transmissions and G-50s would do that.

You can check the fluid level and change the fluid if it’s old, but otherwise it could be just slightly worn synchros.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm sorry, in my OP, I didn't mean to say that the transmission was replaced 19k ago, the CLUTCH was replaced 19k miles ago.

I have not been patient when shifting into 5th to 6th gear. My house is about 5 minutes from the interstate, so the car hasn't had much time to warm up before shifting into those gears. I'll intentionally try to allow more time for the car to warm up next weekend.

As I said in the OP, it doesn't grind as often/at all after I've driven for a while.

personally, if I was getting a replicable consistent grind, I would take it in. That is just me though. Other people have more mellow suggestions. I also live about 2 miles from the freeway, so I get what you are saying about warm up.

normal for the 5th to 6th shift when cold; especially if you have the short shifter. i do a slow shift when cold and it never makes the noise. goes away when warm.

I've the factory short shifter in my 05 997 as well and I too feel resistance when shifting to 6 when cold. Sometimes it's hard to get into 1st even, only when cold though. And I too live a couple of miles from the highway. I prolong my stay in 4th or 5th until engine is warm and I guess the transmission should be warm-ish at that point.

Thanks for the insights. Over the next few days, I'll take a few drives, and wait ~15 minutes or so before shifting to 5th & 6th gears and report back with the results.

I would look into changing the fluid. Can you verify when the last time it was changed?

Even if its been recently, these transmissions have proved to not really like the newest Porsche gear oil and favor the old Mobilube PTX.

+1

Change fluid with Mobilube PTX as the first step and then drive it the same way you have been to see if it made a difference - I'm betting it does.

Hmm, I just changed mine a few months ago and didn’t know this. How can one tell the difference between the two? I though the Porsche OEM fluid I bought was actually Mobilube PTX under the covers??
