Default RADICAL Oil Change! Cold & 9 Quarts!

2009 C2S 126K miles

We haven't had an oil war lately, maybe this will light ya up!

I just did a 6K oil change, Mahle filter, Mobil 1 0w40........ I did it COLD! Yes, and out came 9 quarts of cold oil. Oh and I used a copper oil washer the last time (aluminum this time).

Just heresy eh?

So, I parked my car in my flat garage and didn't start or move it for about 3 days, and when I parked it, the oil was between 200 and 225 F, so it was hot. My assumption that everything that was going to drain out of that engine came out and sat in the sump from when hot 3 days ago. I jacked up the left rear, put the pan under there and removed the magnetic plug with copper washer (~gasp~).... sat the car back down flat..... let it drain for about 2.5 hours. Out came 9 quarts. The oil level was exactly at the top full line and I checked it three times prior to ensure accuracy (sometimes it is different).

I spoke to the dealership tech about my own maintenance.... he said if he lets a 997.2 drain over night, he can get 9 quarts in the next day. My manual denoted 7.9 with filter change.

So, after sitting 3 days from hot, why in the world would I start it up, drive around the neighborhood only to get the oil all back up into the engine again, only to open it up and wait for all the oil to drain back down?

Oh, the copper drain washer didn't pit, corrode or cause the engine to explode. Why copper? On my last change, I needed a new washer and either lost or forgot to order them the last Pelican order... so I went up to Nappa and that was all they had in our size. I was going to re-use the washer but I had already re-used it before (~gasp~).

The magnetic drain plug? OMG! You are never going to believe this... never.... I almost passed out when I saw it... I don't know what to do about this.... there was......nothing.

Peace

Heresy!! What is the world coming to!!

Next you'll be telling us you can put 100K miles on the engine without it blowing up!

100K? Who are you kidding?

I'm weaning the company off of me by staying away Fridays and Mondays. That means there are (gasp) some times that I dont drive mine for three days.

Now, each time I get in after an extended absence I cluck like a chicken for 30 seconds. I find the car starts, so there must be something to this.

Back to those days off ... I'll give the cold drain a go next time. That is, unless Bruce reports calamity in the near future!!!

Did you pre-heat the new Mobil 1 to 220° to avoid thermal shocking the block per the manual? On second thought, since your block was 3 days cold it may be better to skip that step.

Your oil change interval was 6k miles? You might as well book your engine for a rebuild now.

And during this absolutely necessary rebuild, please install the updated IMS.

I can envision Bruce finding a place to duck tape that IMS bearing onto his DFI motor 8)

Do I have to do the first oil change with a copper washer before I can do the 9 litre flush?

2 reasons you'd warm the oil before a change
  1. It helps it to flow better, but if you got 9 quarts out your choice of watery Mobil 0W oil seems to flow fine when cold (sorry, couldn't resist).
  2. More importantly, its to get any contaminants suspended back into the oil since they tend to settle out when it sits, and they'll be more likely to stay behind stuck in the bottom of the sump if you don't swirl them back into solution by running the motor before the drain process
Pretty sure you'll be OK though.

As far as the copper washer, you're on your own..

... but I just installed one onto my 928 yesterday when i did its oil change, so we can go down together.

since you were begging.....yes, heresy!🤮🤮🤮
Do it once and you are forgiven, do it twice and you are nuts!
i’ve used both copper and aluminum washers for years with equal success.
Cheers,

I used a copper washer once on mine and the climate buttons started to peel, foam started coming out of the vents, and the car popped out of first gear at every light.

I've since switched back and its like a new car.

Hey, when you guys used copper was it a deterrent or a magnet for the coppers? I'm thinking of switching if it might prevent a ticket.

How much went in, and what was the final level (per the dash gauge)?

Thanks.

I've done both my diesel truck and 911 when cold in the morning and been able to get out much more oil that way. And no hot oil burning my hands was great. I've since gone back to changing after slightly warmed up. Partly for the reasons Petza states above. But mostly because of concern for lack of lubrication during cold start. Warming first pumps up the hydraulic chain tensioners and throws a coat of oil on the valvetrain before shutting down. After changing the oil and filter there is a delay in oil pressure immediately after starting. Most engine wear on street driven cars takes place during the cold start procedure.
