I think all the talk about issues with the .1 is mainly hot air, I certainly guess I will find out now as an owner. At least what issues there are seem to be well out in the open and understood. Anytime something is "bulletproof" it can also just mean future problems aren't yet understood and eventually someone becomes the guinea pig. To be clear I wouldn't have said no to the right .2 model, I just wasn't afraid of the .1.

I was in the same boat as the OP. Wanted a Porsche, 40k, what to get? I bought a pristine 05' 997.1 base with very low miles and I am very happy. Ultimately I am extremely pleased with my decision, it drives like new and I honestly prefer the pre-facelifted look.

Glad to see all this 997.1 love, you can't enjoy your Porsche in fear.
You'll see some members on here treat the 997.1 as if its a ticking time bomb. You'll get the vibe that without using $400 oil, changed every 1000 miles it'll explode killing you and the nearest 150 people.
I'm at every HPDE in my PCA region, I see countless 997.1's and .2's out there lap after lap, weekend after weekend, year after year. These are great cars, they aren't perfect, but nothing is.

I agree as well, and went with a .1 accordingly. In particular I think the original tail light design is cleaner without the unnecessary "dip" down on the bottom (and all the ugly little dots of the early LED tech), and widebody available without the faux-lightbar going across. I think the front is more classic looking as well. Of course this is getting to nit picking about great cars.

I would rock a 90s in car cell. I just want to state that for the record. Those things were bomb proof!!

Hi all,
First post, first Porsche. OP I just went through the same buying process this past week My choices were 997.1 C2S with 55k miles and a 997.2 Base with 29K miles.
I drove both - preferred the driving dynamics of the .2. I spent more for the low mileage car that was less well optioned but am very happy with it. Specifically I was coming out of a BMW M3 and like the shorter shifter in the .2 vs the .1

I opted for .2 base as IMS was a concern, and a .2 S for $10K more didn’t seem worth it as I’d still probably want to replace shocks and bars. MPG was also a factor having come from an e90 m3 and having a 2500 8.1 suburban.
Power wasn’t a concern for me, I’d rather drive a slow car fast, and have had my fun w high hp cars. In fact if a mx5 had rear seats I’d have probably gotten that.
However, I have to be honest and say the 3.6 is leaving me wanting a tad bit more power. Hate to admit that, but after driving the S, I’m a little disappointed in 3.6’s power, mostly the tq.
Overall though my base .2 I consider a normal dd car, not some unicorn, and that’s kinda what I prefer anyhow. I’ll drive it yr round w snows, pro next to other cars, and not have to worry. At $40K, I consider it just a normal car like buying a 3 series or something, and that aspect of it I love!

Beautiful. Looks like a new car. Consider replacing those amber side markers up front with clear ones. $44.95 from Suncoast and a simple DIY: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PKCLEAR997.html
You'll be surprised at the difference it makes in cleaning up that front section of the car.,
