Cool 997 S vs 996 TT

New to Rennlist. Been looking for 997.2 S for awhile but found a good 2004 996 TT for similar budget number. Which is better?!

If you favor the Turbo, make sure the coolant pipes have been welded or pinned.

If not, expect to pay between $2,000 to $3,000 to have the motor dropped and pipes fixed.

As much as I like to have the "top dog" of any model, I think N/A is the way to go given the increasing rarity. Not to mention THAT sound they make. Flat 6 100hp per liter goodness.

I prefer the more modern looking 997 interior

If you're a casual Porsche fan, go for the newer model. If you're a sports car or Porsche aficionado it's hard not to go Turbo every day and twice on Sunday.

I am not typically in 997 threads, but saw this one’s title on main forum page. Both models were considerations for me last month and was choosing between 01 996TT and 11 997. I generally prefer NA engines but ultimately and surprisingly picked the 996TT to purchase. Why? Mezger engine with direct 911GT1 motorsports heritage (besides, small twin turbos were more linear than expected), less electronics which was refreshing after coming from another newer Porsche, fully depreciated/arguably increasing in value (you may want to check out recent 996TT auctions in BaT). Other than this, the decision may also be down to condition and options for you.

The 996 TT is an amazing performer and an amazing value.

I looked at both as many of us did. In short, a drive will answer the question. I wanted to like the turbo, but didn't at all. For me, it was obvious and took less than 30 seconds. Hate turbo lag!

A small exotic car dealer near me had a 2004 turbo cabriolet, that was well within my price range that I got to drive for several hours. He even told me to take it home for the weekend and see how I liked it (I declined). It was heavier than I expected, the tiptronic transmission is nothing special, it has the same lag and general performance curve of other turbos I have owned from that era, and it just generally seemed dated. I have never liked that body style, either. I ended up with a 2009 C2S "imported" from California, which "feels" a lot more like what I expected a Porsche to feel like (with very limited opportunities to drive it). But, if I had the money, I would probably have bought a 2009 - 2010 turbo.

I don't mind the 996 interior that much and since I bought an '06 Cayenne I like the 996 interior even more!

For me, 997.2 c4s by farrrrrr. I've had a 996tt. The looks are dated, especially the hideous headlights. The 997c4s doesn't feel much slower, but then again you can mod a 996tt into oblivion if that's your thing. The interior of the 996 is hideous compared to a 997, and you'd have to update the stereo to get nice things like aux and bluetooth.

I would never go back to a 996tt. I guess this doesn't make me an official sports car enthusiast or porsche aficionado, I don't care. The 996tt was cool when the 997 didn't exist.

Thanks guys Great feedback! I'm new to Porsche's so will focus back on a copy of 997 and maybe even a 991 NA.
