Last true 911

I'm new to 911 ownership. I drove a 991 and simply didn't like it. I then drove a 996 and really liked it. So I found a 997.2 and bought it, as it was the best of everything.
Bulletproof engine combined with the driving involvement of the 996.
And ya, I could afford the 991. Damn thing felt like a Miata with more power to me. My 997 feels serious.

I have owned both 997.2 models and 991.1 models. They are both great, but both different. The 997.2 isn't that much more raw than the 991, especially if you compare PASM with SPASM equipped models. The 997.2 feels smaller, a bit noisier (except for the exhaust, however the 991.1's I have had all had PSE). The interior on the 991 feels nicer, the 991 looks (to me) a bit more aggressive, the 997 more classic. Both feel like very capable cars, and the differences, again, to me, are not that significant. Neither car will induce significant oversteer and put the driver in danger on public roads. Both are fast, and balanced. The one big edge in the 997 is the manual transmission; the 7MT in the 991 just doesn't have the crispness. The 997 looks a bit more classic, the 991 a bit more upscale. Who is impressed by the car will depend on who is looking at the car; an enthusiast may be drawn to the 997, whereas someone who is drawn to cool cars in general but doesn't know Porsche will gravitate toward the 991.

Everyone knows that as soon as he 992 launches, the 991 will be the last real 911. It is so raw and visceral compared to the 992, which is really just a fat, bloated GT car.

I think they are all beautiful and if I could afford it I would probably have bought a new one. When I bought my C4S in November, It was at Flemington Porsche, a CPO, and It is what I could afford. They had a couple of newer cars. A GTS and a GT3 I think, that were to die for.. At the time I was not very involved with the forum so I did not know much at all about 996 vs 977.1 vs 977.2. I feel lucky to have my car but if the money was there the new one would have been in my garage. There is no bad 911.

We don't even have to wait, I've already seen/heard people in the 991 corners saying it. (Though I think the "raw and visceral" rhetoric is a little milder than it used to be, at least.)
